“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, Carolyn Reinach Wolf finds a straw at which to grasp. Here’s a teaser:

After years of school shootings, a shift has finally emerged in how we as a country, and crucially the legal system, perceives the accountability of gun owners, specifically parents. Colin Gray, father of the 14-year-old who killed four people and injured nine others in the latest massacre at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder, four counts of involuntary manslaughter and eight counts of cruelty to children.

(snip)

What happens next is uncertain, but we’ve already seen a major shift in legal precedent. Earlier this year, two separate juries in Michigan found the parents of a school shooter guilty of manslaughter after prosecutors showed they not only purchased the weapon he used in the shooting for their son and failed to secure it, but also ignored numerous warnings from the school and cries for help from their own child.

A Notion of Immigrants 0

Writing at The Charlotte Observer, Esther Alejandra Sierra, a legal immigrant working in health care, reports that the hatred and bile towards immigrants being spread by Donald Trump and J. D. Vance is spreading. Here’s a bit from her article:

When extreme politicians at the federal and state levels make baseless accusations blaming immigrants for rising crime rates and our country’s problems, it’s not just deeply offensive and disrespectful, but it creates a hostile atmosphere in my community. This fear-mongering spreads unnecessary mistrust among our friends and neighbors and should be strongly denounced.

It was all this, I think, that made me begin to have doubts about religion and even about God. If this person, I kept telling myself, was one of God’s chosen salesmen on earth, then there must be something very wrong about the whole business.

The Chaos Agent 0

The Rude One thinks that Nikki Haley got one thing right. Here’s how he starts his article:

As odious as the vast majority of her statements and her beliefs are, former Republican presidential candidate and winner of “Most Predictable Hypocrite of the Year” Nikki Haley did get something right about Donald Trump before her defiance crumbled. She spoke frequently about the “chaos” that follows in Trump’s wide wake, like Godzilla without the personality marching through Tokyo again. She even had an ad called “More Chaos,” where the narrator says things like “The chaos that surrounds him is bad enough” and “with Trump it’s just more chaos.”

All That Was Old Is New Again 0

At the Idaho State Journal, Kim Shinkoskey envisions Donald Trump’s–er–vision for America. A snippet:

Trump wants the government in his hands alone, or in the hands of one of his sons, or in the hands of any capable autocrat who believes that the rich and famous should be set apart as a separate aristocratic class having special economic and political privileges above everybody else. This is a very old, very venerable, and historically very successful playbook, folks. It is called monarchy.
