“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” 0

When playing with a gun becomes gun play . . . .

Geiger told police “she and Osborne were engaged in harmless banter when he jokingly requested she shoot him,” police wrote in the sworn statement.

Geiger said she thought her “firearm was empty, pointed the weapon at Osborne and pulled the trigger.”

Too many guns. Too much stupid.

There is nothing in machinery, there is nothing in embankments and railways and iron bridges and engineering devices to oblige them to be ugly. Ugliness is the measure of imperfection.

Medicare Disadvantage 0

Medicare “Advantage” plans aren’t. A snippet from Truthout’s report:

Last year, more MA members than expected used their benefits to get necessary medical care. One might assume that companies would expect beneficiaries to use health care services. But after years of making outsized profits, the insurance companies that own these plans are reacting to this by downsizing plans, cutting benefits, increasing copays, and raising prescription drug deductibles. In other words, Medicare Advantage beneficiaries are being penalized for using the health care that they pay for.

Methinks they should be renamed “Medicare Take Advantage.”

From the git-go, “Medicare Advantage” was a con and a scam to allow private companies to suckle at the public teat.

“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” 0

Yet another “responsible gun owner” shares his politeness with a child.

A man was arrested after authorities say a 5-year-old girl found a gun and accidentally shot herself at a home in northwest Harris County overnight Sunday.

The girl was taken to a hospital and underwent surgery. She is currently in fair condition and is expected to survive her injuries.

One more time, “responsible gun owner” is an oxymoron.

Whose Land is this anyway? Does to belong to the mega-corporations, and we’re just here to be their workforce? Does it belong to Trump and the willing victims of his lies? Let’s take a look at where we stand on that issue.

The Hurricane Disinformation Hurricane 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, Susan A. Nolan and Michael Kimball look at the swirl of falsehoods that followed hurricanes Helene and Milton and at the reasons some persons allowed themselves to be swept up in the cyclone of claptrap. They also offer some suggestions for preparing a storm cellar in which to shelter from the stormers.

In view of the amount of traffic on the disinformation superhighway, I find it a worthwhile read.

Nor Any Drop To Drink, Reprise 0

I once visited Lake Powell and went tubing in the Colorado River below Glen Canyon Dam.

Apparently, it now bears little resemblance to what I saw there three decades ago. Here’s a bit from the article by Zak Podmore:

But since the year 2000, Lake Powell has been in decline. Climate change has reduced runoff throughout the Colorado River Basin by around 20% compared to the previous century. In 2022, the reservoir—the second-largest in the country after Lake Mead—was less than a quarter full.

Nearly every boat ramp on Lake Powell was unusable last spring, and there was barely enough water to sustain hydroelectric generation. One more bad snow year would have pushed the Colorado River system to the brink of collapse, dropping the reservoir’s surface toward the lowest outlets on the Glen Canyon Dam—a point known as “dead pool.”
