“Can You Give Me Sanctuary?
I Must Have a Place To Hide,
A Place for Me To Hide”
0

Dan Casey considers causes, both proximate and approximate:

Anyone who would argue that the flow of migrants (from the Middle East–ed.) is not the responsibility of the United States would have to argue that the U.S. history of involvement in the Middle East since at least 2001 simply did not occur. That might be something that delusional or lying candidates for president, Democratic and Republican, might maintain, but people who live in the real world know better.

Behind the Syrian Exodus 2

Der Spiegel tries to make sense of what’s happening in Syria and concludes that it’s a mess. Here’s a bit; if you want a better understanding of who the players are and what’s happened so far, follow the link.

It may simply be too late for Syria.

Family Lies Ties 0

“The Smart One” forgets about his brother’s signal accomplishment. Daniel Ruth sets him straight:

If you want to take issue with Obama’s management of Iraq, fine, fair enough. Hand-wring away. But in the end, there is only one person responsible for today’s Persian Gulf calamity, and Jeb needs to look no further than the family tree to find his feckless older brother, George W. Bush, as the prime architect of Iraq’s anarchy.

It was George W. Bush and his handpicked stooges who literally lied the United States into an unnecessary war with a nation that had absolutely nothing to do with the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States. But you didn’t hear that in Jeb Bush’s speech.

It was because of his brother’s ineptitude and lack of understanding of the Middle East and the Persian Gulf region that after hostilities began, the Bush administration all but assured neighboring Iran would now have a compliant, albeit corrupt, ally. But you didn’t hear that in Jeb Bush’s remarks at the Reagan shrine.

The Perverse Logic of MAD 0

Der Spiegel interviews Mikhail Gorbachev, the man who did more than anyone else to end the Cold War, regardless of the claims of Ronald Reagan’s PR machine. Read it.

Here’s a bit.

SPIEGEL: What do you think of the oft-cited theory that mutually assured destruction prevents nuclear wars?

Gorbachev: There’s a dangerous logic in that. Here’s another question: If five or 10 countries are allowed to have nuclear weapons, then why can’t 20 or 30? Today, a few dozen countries have the technical prerequisites to build nuclear weapons. The alternative is clear: Either we move toward a nuclear-free world or we have to accept that nuclear weapons will continue to spread, step by step, across the globe. And can we really imagine a world without nuclear weapons if a single country amasses so many conventional weapons that its military budget nearly tops that of all other countries combined? This country would enjoy total military supremacy if nuclear weapons were abolished.

SPIEGEL: You’re talking about the US?

Gorbachev: You said it. It is an insurmountable obstacle on the road to a nuclear-free world.

War and Mongers of War 0

Jim Wright hears the war drums. Here’s a bit; follow the link for the rest.

We’ve got to do something. We’ve got to kill some people, man!

War, it’s always the answer.

War, it’s what Jesus would do. That’s what The Decider would do! That’s what Reagan would do! War! War! War!

War and Mongers of War 0

Eric Schwartz and Brian Atwood note that those who monger war seem incapable of learning (emphasis added):

Remarkably, there are still unrepentant cheerleaders for that war (the Great and Glorious Patriotic War for a Lie in Iraq–ed.), as well as those who argue that the U.S. invasion was a good idea in principle that was just executed poorly. And they are among the most influential voices opposed to the agreement with Iran.

Why does it matter that the pundits who were so convinced about invading Iraq more than a decade ago now pursue with passionate certainty the defeat of the diplomatic effort involving Iran?
