Politeness is essential to a successful dining out experience.

The victim said Kenneth Reese, 21, of Houston, and a woman walked into the fast food restaurant as the business was closing.

When the employee refused to serve the pair, Reese reportedly became upset and made a comment about “shooting this place up”.

Officials say as the pair was leaving, Reese pointed a gun at the employee.

A short time later, a different officer responded to an accident at Rock Prairie Road and State Highway 6, which authorities determined also involved Reese.

Politeness is a family value.

The Pratt County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accidental shooting of a 5-year-old girl Wednesday morning in the southeast part of the county.

The sheriff’s office says the girl’s brother accidentally fired the single shot that hit her in the left arm. One adult was home at the time of the shooting, the sheriff’s office says.

No mention is made of the age of the brother, but the wording at the link above and in Pratt County’s local rag gives the impression that he not very old.

A recipe for politeness at the confluence of guns and stupid:

Warren police say Garlock put the gun in the broiler because children were coming over.

His girlfriend, unaware of the gun’s presence, turned on the oven Sunday to bake. Police say she called out to Garlock when she thought she heard a gunshot fired outside. Police say Garlock was struck by bullets or bullet fragments when they exploded inside the gun.

The person who wrote the story decided to be all cutesy-poo and point out that “no charges have been filed against the oven,” but, then, it wasn’t the oven that was stupid and negligent was it?

It wasn’t the girlfriend, either. How many of you open the oven door to check for weaponry before turning on the broiler?

Fuffu.

Get a load of the politeness:

Police say the 24-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man were staying at Hotel 116 near downtown Bellevue.

She told investigators that the man was playing around with a handgun and she had told him to stop. He reportedly told her not to worry because the gun was unloaded. At one point, he put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger.

It was loaded.

Papering over politeness:

The Xenia man in his 60s who shot himself while in the restroom at the Austin Landing HomeGoods store was using a holster not regulated for the gun he was carrying, a spokeswoman with Austin Landing said.

The holster was filled with some type of paper to make the gun fit, the spokeswoman, Cheryl Dillin, told News Center 7’s Malik Perkins on Tuesday.

The story goes on the say that the man was legally packing under Ohio’s laws, providing additional evidence that, as Dickens reminded us, “the law is an ass.”

Functional politeness:

It all started around 9:30 Tuesday night, with a call for a gunshot victim at Sheetz on Perry Hwy. in Summit Township.

Troopers say the victim shot himself while checking the function of a gun. No word yet on where the gunfire happened.

Well, I reckon it functioned as designed . . . .

Reg Henry muses on American gun culture. A snippet:

In this moment of despair, when the choice appears to be between doing nothing, or doing something that foolishly poses as doing something, let me offer an irreverent thought that goes to the heart of the matter: Concerning all those thoughts and prayers for victims of gun violence, to what god are they addressed?

(snip)

The core problem is that a sizable number of Americans have made a golden calf to worship. But that graven image is not golden; it is made of shining gun metal. As long as the almighty gun is put on a pedestal in our culture, praising the Lord and passing the ammunition in the general context of our world only perpetuates the suffering.

Shot at a sleepover:

Warren Wimberly, 14, was shot in the chest at a sleep over at a friends house. Guillory says another 14-year-old boy didn’t realize the gun he had was loaded when he pointed it at Wimberly and the gun was discharged.

Thus passeth another day in the NRA’s Garden of Eden.

Afterthoughts:

How craven can the use of the passive voice be? “The gun was discharged.” The weasel wording, it burns! It was discharged oh so passively, no blame attaches.

When I was a young ‘un, back in the olden days, I was taught to assume that all guns were loaded until demonstrated otherwise.
