Play politely.

An off-duty Iredell County sheriff’s deputy accidentally discharged a gun at a bowling alley Friday night and a 10-year-old child was hit by a fragment of the bullet after it ricocheted off the floor, authorities told ABC affiliate WSOC.

(snip)

The incident happened while the deputy was bowling, the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office said.

Left unclear is whether the deputy was wearing his sidearm while making his approach.

There’s no politeness like stray politeness.

Instead, police said they were told that several men were arguing in the parking lot at the 76 gas station at Seventh and Maclay streets when gunfire rang out about 2:30 a.m.

A bullet struck Donna Warren, 51, before she could reach the store where police believe she intended to buy something. She collapsed in the parking lot, said Police Commissioner Thomas Carter.

The people who had been arguing then fled.

Just another day in NRA Paradise, where daily carnage is a given.

We are a society of stupid.

Arms and the Boy 0

Solomon Jones looks at the spate of school shootings and reflects on the white privilege to bear arms. A snippet:

In the 22 school shootings this year where deaths or injuries occurred and suspects have been identified, the majority of suspects have been white males. And with the exception of two school shootings — one of which took place outside Lincoln High School in Philadelphia — the incidents have taken place in suburban or rural environments.

Until America is willing to confront these obvious truths, we won’t be able to solve the scourge of school shootings. Because acknowledging that white males in non-urban environments are most likely to commit school shootings would require America to abandon its most treasured stereotypes. . . .

In a country that has long portrayed city-dwelling people of color as the main purveyors of violence, that kind of acknowledgement would require a fundamental reshaping of who we are. America would have to profile white suburban males with the same fervor it does urban males of color. Police officers would have to claim they fear for their lives in the presence of white rural men and boys. The veil of suspicion that drapes over the lives of males of color would have to be extended to white males, as well.

Do please read the rest.

The NRA’s Dance of Death 0

The Rude One calls the steps of the mass/school-shooting bugaloo.

A snippet:

The horror will inevitably combine with the “thoughts and prayers” step, which will be followed by the “shooter is a socialist Bernie-lover” turn until it becomes the “oh, wait, nope, he’s another right-wing asshole” twist, which will be followed by the “anger and outrage against guns” step, accompanied by the “we need new gun laws” kick, which is followed quickly by the “angry backlash against the anger and outrage” twirl with a “too soon to talk about it” flourish, accompanied by the “2nd Amendment is more important than lives” head nod, the “law-abiding gun owners” saunter, and the “you don’t know what an assault rifle is, libtard” bow, which is followed by the “we need action” foot stomp and the “mental illness” waist thrust, which is followed by the “don’t worry, gun nuts, we’re not touching your precious murder tools” final step. Eventually, the dance will be complete, everyone will end up where they began, and most, but not all, will leave to go to their regular lives, while others will stay behind and wonder why no one will let them change from a roundelay to a two-step, where at least you can end up in a new place on the dance floor.

Just Another Day in NRA Paradise 0

The current fad among the krool kids seems to be to take a gun to school and blow random persons to kingdom come. This is a uniquely modern and uniquely American phenomena.

Yes, there are occasional mass shootings (normally defined as shootings in which three or more persons are killed or wounded) in other countries, but nothing like what we are seeing here. When I was in school (it seems like a lifetime ago, because it was), school shooting did not happen. So what’s different now?

At Psychology Today Blogs, George Everly offers five reasons for the carnage–for carnage it is. Here are the reasons he cites as primary; follow the link for his justification for each one:

      1. Predatory bullying and marginalization.
      2. Weaponized social media.
      3. Inadequate access to mental health services.
      4. Media coverage.
      5. Firearms.

In related news, the Seattle Times’s Danny Westneat wonders what this means (a snippet, emphasis added):

“The effect of this ‘secondhand terrorism’ on kids is, however, largely undocumented,” the “Generation Parkland” essay (follow the link for the citation–ed.) concluded.

After the inspiring gun protests this spring, I’ve noticed something disturbing creeping in that I recognize from my own generation. There’s acceptance of our country’s insane blood rituals. There’s a realization that “This is America,” as the No. 1 song says.

“Prepare to see students rise up and be called ‘civil terrorists’ and crisis actors,” wrote Cameron Kasky, a Parkland survivor. “Prepare for the right-wing media to attack the survivors.”

It’s not the America I want or grew up in, but it’s clearly the America that someone wants, or we see more other than “thoughts and prayers” emanating from Washington, D. C.

One wonders how twisted and immoral a mind must be to consider such carnage acceptable.

Facebook Frolics 0

Firearms frolics. Here’s a sample:

In the first hours after the Texas school shooting that left at least ten dead Friday, online hoaxers moved quickly to spread a viral lie, creating fake Facebook accounts with the suspected shooter’s name and a doctored photo showing him wearing a “Hillary 2016” hat.

(snip)

The fake accounts included the name of Dimitrios Pagourtzis, the 17-year-old student and suspect that police say is now in custody, and included a photo taken from his Facebook that had been changed to include a hat from Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.

Soulless bastards.

Crossing the teas of politeness . . . .

The man reportedly told Presswood that he had been working in his garden at home when he asked his friend if she would fix him a sandwich.

As she did that, he headed into an outbuilding to get a glass of sweet tea off the shelf above his head.

As he brought the tea down, however, it apparently knocked off the firearm, which landed on the floor in a way that the hammer clicked and the gun went off.
