Empty calories, loaded guns.

Authorities report that there was a bit of rage between two cars next to each other in the drive thru and an argument eventually ensued. Once Phillip Bailey received his order he reportedly threw his smoothie at 91 year old Johnnie Douglas’ car. Douglas then responded by firing a revolver at Bailey, who was unharmed.

Early practice:

A man planning to do some target shooting at Andy Dalton Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center accidentally shot himself in the leg while still in his vehicle, a range manager confirmed Friday.

Mike Brooks, outdoor education manager at the range, said a man accidentally shot himself in his upper right thigh with a 9mm handgun.

Clearly, he needs some practice . . . .

Making the world a politer place . . . .

Tyler Carlson, 28, of Austin; Michael Fox, 69, of Georgetown; and Tracy Garwood, 62, of Scottsdale, Arizona, were each charged with one count of conspiracy to violate multiple federal laws, including possessing and transferring unregistered machine guns and unlawfully exporting firearms to Mexico, the release said. Each of them is facing up to five years in federal prison on that charge.

Arms Proliferation 0

Werner Herzog’s Bear shares his musing about Donald Trump’s speech at to the NRA. It is worth a read. Here’s a nugget:

Now let’s play a game. Let’s imagine we are behind the veil of ignorance in an unnamed country. If the leader of that country went to an organization advocating gun proliferation, whose convention attacked political dissent and the press, and that leader spent his speech ranting against his enemies, how would we view it? This certainly does not sound like the behavior of a democratic leader. It sounds like a despot. . . .

Be polite to domestic animals.

The horse’s owner had noticed some changes in its behavior, and upon observing the injury Saturday morning called in a veterinarian.

It appeared the horse had been shot in the side two to three days earlier, DeMars said.

“Right now, we believe it’s an accidental thing, and an isolated incident,” DeMars said, adding, “We don’t believe anyone else’s horses are in danger.”

Of course, had the horse been packing, it could have defended itself. Just ask the NRA.

A study by the Associated Press gives evidence that more guns in more schools will not the be panacea the NRA claims it will. Here’s a snippet:

They are the “good guys with guns” the National Rifle Association says are needed to protect students from shooters: a school police officer, a teacher who moonlights in law enforcement, a veteran sheriff.

Yet in a span of 48 hours in March, the three were responsible for gun safety lapses that put students in danger.

The school police officer accidentally fired his gun in his Virginia office, sending a bullet through a wall into a middle school classroom. The teacher was demonstrating firearm safety in California when he mistakenly put a round in the ceiling, injuring three students who were hit by falling debris. And the sheriff left a loaded service weapon in a locker room at a Michigan middle school, where a sixth-grader found it.

Indeed, casual reading of the newspapers shows that more guns seldom solves a problem. Facts, though, will certainly not be allowed to interfere with the NRA’s worship of their steel idol.

Politeness builds strong relationships.

The incident turned out to be an accidental discharge of a gun. The man shot himself through the hand and the bullet ended up hitting his girlfriend in the stomach, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

One more time: There is no such thing as “an accidental discharge of a gun.” “Discharges of a gun” are either intentional or negligent; when implements of death are involved, “accidental” is not an option.

The polity would be better served if the news media realized that.

Family togetherness, the polite way:

Another reminder that politeness takes practice.

Dispatch records said that a 21-year-old man called 911 shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday to report the incident.

The sheriff said that at the time, a man was using a shotgun to shoot down range, with the 16-year-old standing behind him.

When the first individual took a shot, he dropped the gun on the recoil. When the gun hit the ground, it fired again, and the teen was struck in the stomach and leg with buckshot.

Politeness is a family value.

Soward said Vicente Valero, 17, was sitting at a table in the family’s home across from his father as his father was working on a 45-caliber handgun.

The sheriff said the boy’s father thought the gun was unloaded when it suddenly fired one bullet. The bullet hit the father’s finger before striking his son in the chest, killing his only child, the sheriff said.

Politeness takes practice.

Almond’s wife told deputies that she heard several gunshots just before her husband was found inside their garage. Evidence of the shooting was discovered by investigators.

Deputies soon found two people from an adjacent property who had been target shooting just before Almond was found dead. Three guns, as well as ammunition, were seized from the two.

When I was growing up, I would set up cans on a log and practice shooting them. Knowing that even a .22 calibre bullet from a rifle can carry up to a mile (and, at close range, can penetrate through seven 3/4-inch thick pine boards before lodging in the eighth), I would not do that during hunting season, as there might have been hunters in the woods, the woods you can see behind the house in the picture on the banner at the top of the page.

And these clowns–maybe not the ones mentioned in the story, but certainly some clowns in the neighborhood–were shooting in the direction of a residence.

After all, turkeys also walk on two legs . . . .

Slip yourself a little politeness on the side . . . .

Lake County Sheriff officers responded to a report of an accidental shooting at 11:19 a.m. Officials said they found that the man had been handling a semiautomatic pistol that his wife recently purchased and shot himself above the knee cap when his finger slipped, said Sgt. Sara Balmes of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
