Arming teachers is the bees’ knees.

Dennis Alexander, who is Seaside City’s mayor pro tem and a reserve officer with the Sand City Police Department, was teaching a lesson at Seaside High School in Seaside when he pointed his gun into the ceiling and accidentally fired it, said Abdul Pridgen, the city’s police chief.

A 17-year-old student was injured by a bullet fragment or by debris that fell from the ceiling, Pridgen said.

The Fascination with Firearms 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, Molly S. Castelloe strives to understand gunnuttery by reviewing some of the research and analyses thereof. A snippet:

We have a pathological preoccupation with guns, Peay writes, and our country seems at times like an adolescent still rebelling from a colonizing parent. Jungian psychoanalyst Luigi Zoja describes the allure of the gun as “a naïve expression of macho masculinity – a show of sexuality and arrogant power.” Psychiatrist Robert Jay Lifton explains it this way. While our nation is a military superpower, the most powerful and wealthiest in the world — and in history — it is also very young compared to most countries. Lifton speculates that our country’s preoccupation with guns replaces a sense of long national history and a grounded, coherent and stable national identity.

I would take exception to this statement, “it is also very young compared to most countries,” to this extent. The United States is very young compared to European and Asian countries. It’s valid to the extent that the U. S. considers itself their offspring, but it is not young compared to other countries in the Americas and much of southern Africa. Nevertheless, most of those countries, excepting those in political turmoil, do not have the level of one-on-one violence that the United States endures.

Politeness takes practice.

According to the sheriff’s department, deputies were called to Highway 467 near Edwards after a stray bullet hit a 59-year-old man.

“Two juveniles were target practicing near-by when a bullet apparently struck a neighbor in the neck,” Major Pete Luke said.

Be polite while visiting a retail establishment.

A military veteran was injured at the Miami Armory this afternoon with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the buttocks, said owner David Becker.

Becker said the man shot himself while reholstering a semi-automatic weapon he was showing an armory employee. He said the man, who he declined to identify, was alert before being taken by medic to an area hospital.

Be polite in the parking lot.

Police were called to the parking lot of the American Bar & Grill in the 1000 block of North Plum Street just before 12:48 a.m. They arrived to find a man with a gunshot wound to the leg.

(snip)

Police determined the gunshot wound was self-inflicted as a result of an accidental handgun discharge.

Politeness is child’s play.

Authorities say a student accidentally shot himself Friday morning at a high school in Kentucky.

(snip)

A student who was in a classroom at the same time the gunshot occurred told CBS affiliate WLKY another student was playing with the gun before it accidentally fired. The student playing with the gun suffered a hand injury, the witness told the station.

Politeness is a family affair.

Deputies determined that the 11-year-old boy had been shot in the ankle with a .22 caliber rifle by his 16-year-old brother outside their residence, Channel said. The injury was not life-threatening, Channel said.

Channel said Friday that while the sheriff’s office continues to investigate the incident, it is believed to have been an accidental shooting.

Plumb the depths of politeness.

The 62-year-old man was working under the sink in the kitchen of a Chandler Street residence. He had a pistol on his side, and apparently as he moved around under the sink, he somehow cocked the pistol, it went off and he was shot in the chest, according to the police report.

Of course, if he had had more guns, this would no doubt not have happened.

Exhibit politeness at the exhibition.

The unidentified 42-year-old “had a negligent discharge of his personal firearm while seated in his vehicle,” police wrote in an email Monday, saying the investigation into the incident is preliminary.

The shooting occurred in the parking lot of the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds, which was hosting the Big Bore Gun Show from Friday until Sunday.

The Portland Press-Herald’s Bill Nemitz comments on the gyrations of one Maine school district to justify banning students from participating in any protest against school shootings. A snippet:

“As a school it’s not within our role to promote political viewpoints,” Superintendent Virginia Rebar, who presides over public schools in Moscow and Bingham, told Morning Sentinel reporter Emily Higginbotham in an interview.

(snip)

My guess is those kids would not consider gun violence political at all. To them, and to their still-grieving families and friends, it’s literally a matter of life or gruesome death.

Yet here we have Superintendent Rebar, following a hastily called meeting with the SAD 13 school board on Tuesday, twisting and torturing everything from the First Amendment to basic logic.

Be polite to the love of your life.

The elderly male told deputies he was in a room by himself testing out a new magazine he had purchased for his 45 caliber handgun. He loaded the magazine and placed it into the gun. He pulled the slide back on the gun and loaded a bullet into the gun to make sure the magazine would feed the bullets reliably.

According to the man, after loading the gun he removed the magazine and went to pull back the gun’s slide to remove the live bullet. That is when the gun suddenly went off and the bullet traveled through the wall into the adjoining room where his wife was seated.

Had the wife been packing, no doubt she could have prevented this.

Just ask the NRA.

Afterthought:

The whole damn country is suffering from lead poisoning.

Surprise your neighbor with politeness.

The noise from the gunshot jolted her awake at 3 in the morning. She heard a knock at the door a short time later, but was afraid to answer.

She says the gunshot turns out to have been accidentally fired by a neighbor, who was cleaning their assault rifle.

Politeness is no joke.

Officers then began to investigate the scene and spoke with Brown who told police the shooting was an accident after the two were joking about a social media post called, “Why are you lacking,” according to court documents.

Brown allegedly told police he grabbed the gun off of a coffee table and pointed at Crews and did not realize the weapon was loaded, police said.

Brown allegedly pulled the trigger and said he saw the flash from the gun and then realized Crews was shot in the face, police said.

Misdirection Play the NRA Way 0

Eugene Robinson spots a ploy:

The deliberately outrageous idea of arming classroom teachers is nothing more than a distraction, a ploy by the gun lobby to buy time for passions to cool. Don’t get sidetracked. Keep the focus where it belongs — on keeping military-style assault rifles out of civilian hands.

The National Rifle Association and its vassals in the Republican Party would like you to exhaust your outrage on a possibility that is, from the start, impossible.
