Resolve workplace differences politely.

A Birmingham man shot to death when he tried to break up a brawl at the security company where he worked was there to pick up his first paycheck after taking the job just weeks ago to be able to provide his family with a better Christmas.

(snip)

The shooting happened about 4:40 p.m. Tuesday at I.P.E.S. Birmingham police spokesman Lt. Sean Edwards said it started when a female employee was working off-site and learned she was being fired. She drove back to the office and got into a fight with another female employee. “It ended up being a pretty large fight with two females and another male,” Edwards said.

During the fight, one of the women grabbed a handgun, returned and started shooting. The woman firing the shots was not the woman who had been fired, police said.

Play politely.

A 14-year-old girl had to be flown to a hospital after being shot by a 7-year-old boy playing “deer hunter” on Saturday, the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office said.
The boy was visiting a home on E. 310 Road in the northeastern part of the county when he got a .22-caliber rifle from a bedroom and said he was going to play “deer hunter,” the sheriff’s office said.

No adults were at home and the gun was obviously unsecured, but no charges will be filed because it was just all good clean fun and boys and their toys and all that.

According to her mother, Kinzie Eisenbise was with a handful of friends at a friend’s house, when the shotgun went off.

Take a hike, politely.

Investigators learned the man, who was not immediately identified, had been taking a walk with his girlfriend and had returned to the east entry of Presidential Estates. He was carrying a handgun and knew he needed to dismantle it before traveling anywhere because he did not have a valid concealed pistol license.

As he reached down for the gun and was handling it, he accidentally shot himself in the leg, police say. He was treated at Metro Health Hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening.

The hunt for politeness continues.

The Swift County Sheriff’s Office says 36-year-old Robert Schlieman of Detroit Lakes was shot just after noon Saturday while deer hunting north of Holloway.

Authorities say a deer ran between other hunters that Schlieman was hunting with. One of the hunters thought the deer was far enough away and started shooting at the deer.

I have nothing against hunting, at least by responsible hunters who obey the law and dine on their prey; I grew surrounded by such hunters. I must say, however, that trigger-happy hunters continually undermine their own pastime.

Be polite when paying.

The man was headed toward the register when his gun fell and fired a single round into another man’s calf, said spokeswoman Kristen Bentsen in an email. The man was carrying the gun legally, she noted.

“Open carry” is working out so very nicely, is it not?

Afterthought:

I ate at a Cracker Barrel once. It was the day that the space shuttle Challenger fell out of the sky.

I didn’t need another reason to avoid them.
