Another tale of youthful politeness.

The shooting death of Margaret “Maggie” Hollifield, 10, of Crozet, has been ruled accidental, Albemarle County police said Thursday.

The pastor’s daughter was shot shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday by a “juvenile male,” police said. County police continued Thursday to refuse to disclose details such as the shooter’s relationship to Hollifield, or whether charges will be filed in her death.

It continues:

The slaying of 10-year-old Elvira Campos as she sat and watched TV on Saturday night in her North Highlands house was not an accident, according to Sacramento County sheriff’s homicide investigators.

Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Jason Ramos said the killer or killers who targeted the house could see who was watching TV in the family’s living room because there was plenty of ambient light.

Four bullet holes pierced the living room window barely a foot from the back of the girl’s head.

Channel 2 Action News reported that the victim (an eight-year-old girl–ed.) was in bed when a stray bullet entered her family’s apartment and struck her in the leg.

Police found several shell casings from an assault rifle scattered in the parking lot of the Shawnee Apartments, according to Channel 2.

To add insult to injury, it happened on Gun Club Road.

A polite little boy.

A 2-year-old boy in North Carolina is expected to survive after shooting himself with his father’s gun over the weekend.

Randolph County deputies said that the toddler found the handgun in his parents’ room at their home just outside Asheboro around 2 p.m. on Saturday. The boy put the gun in his mouth and fired it.

If Speeding Were Banned, Only Criminals Would Speed 0

Pete Hamilton recognizes the wisdom of the NRA’s reasoning:

Yeah! Maybe those NRA people have a point. Their assertion is that any form of gun control laws are simply harassment of law-abiding citizens; the criminals pay no attention to them anyway.

(snip)

My experience on the interstate certainly seemed to support such logic. There I was, attempting to obey the law while almost every other driver seemed to be totally ignoring the speed limit, and was adding insult to injury by casting aspersions in my direction. Just like the proposed gun control legislation that the NRA opposes, those speed limits were serving no purpose other than to harass me — a law-abiding citizen — while imposing no restrictions whatsoever on those who chose to ignore them.

The triumph of politeness.

An excerpt from the accompanying article:

Overlooked in this debate (gun control–ed.) is a very important element in the Constitution, namely Article I, Section 8, paragraph 16.

That paragraph grants to Congress the express power to provide for authorizing and funding state militias, whose officers are appointed by the respective states. It seems clear that these militias envisioned by the Constitution are presently the state national guards.

In a twist, instead of Congress funding militias, we have militants funding Congresspersons.

Bowl yourself over with politeness.

A man accidentally shot himself in the leg while bowling at Jupiter Lanes about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said. Witnesses said the man had been carrying a gun in the pocket of his shorts.

“The guy just stepped up to bowl,” Jim Miller said. “I think he hit his leg on his back swing.”

I guess he can tell his friends that he shot 30-aught-6.

Afterthought:

How many gun nuts have to shoot themselves or members of their families before they figure out that there’s something wrong in this picture?

Be polite to your pre-school.

Following a report that a 4-year-old child brought a loaded handgun to a local preschool last month, the Kennebec County District Attorney’s Office has asked for more information to determine whether to bring charges.

Hallowell Police Chief Eric Nason said a staff member found the loaded .380 caliber, semi-automatic handgun in a bag brought to Rollins Family Child Care Center on Litchfield Road. Nason said the gun’s safety was on but a round was in the chamber.

You can’t make this stuff up.

A man who apparently thought that a pistol wrapped in aluminum foil would be undetectable to airport X-ray machines is facing a federal criminal charge for allegedly trying to smuggle the loaded weapon on a flight from San Francisco to Europe.

It’s sort of like mail order gun nut viagra:

The number of non-Virginians obtaining state-issued concealed handgun permits has boomed in the four years since Ken Cuccinelli sponsored legislation making it clear that online testing meets the legal training requirement for them.

A local gun shop markets on-line training courses which residents in states with reciprocity agreements with Virginia can use to meet safety training requirements.

It makes as much sense as getting a driver’s license after learning to drive in Second Life.

The Purpose Driven Strife (Updated) 0

Leonard Pitts, Jr., looks at the rightwing tendency to manufacture panic over nonexistent threats. A nugget:

Because it isn’t. Kokesh’s (planned armed “protest” in defense of gunnuttery) march is just the latest product of the great American panic machine, the mechanism by which the extreme right works itself into spasms of apoplectic terror over threats that don’t exist.

“We’re going to be under sharia law!”

Except, we’re not.

“We’ve become a socialist country!”

Except we haven’t.

“There’s a War on Christmas!”

Except there isn’t.

“They’re trying to take our guns away!”

Pitts suggest that the danger of these waves of panic is in distracting us from actual threats to the polity.

I go further.

I think that’s not only the danger of them, I think that, as far as the threat meisters are concerned, that is the purpose of them.

Addendum:

For example.

Children should be polite.

A five-year-old boy in Denton, Texas was left in critical condition after he was shot in the head by his eight-year-old friend Saturday morning. According to the Denton Record-Chronicle, the police said the two boys were alone in the bedroom when the older child found a .22 caliber rifle, pointed it at the other boy, and shot him.

Mike Lukovich foresees the response:

Pickup with bumper sticker: Guns don't kill children. Children kill children.

Stupid Grown-Up Tricks (Updated) 0

From the resident curmudgeon at my local rag.

I seldom agree with her, but this is one of the exceptions. It’s a case where her curmudgeonly talents are well employed.

Perhaps you heard. A pair of second-graders were suspended this week from Suffolk’s Driver Elementary School.

For the crime of being boys.

On Friday, these two 7-year-olds pointed pencils at each other and made shooting noises. By doing so, they triggered Suffolk’s Code Hysteria and automatically were bounced from school for two days.

She comes perilously close to implying that this is somehow akin to a desire for rational gun regulations, but stops just short.

She reports that Suffolk officials were, as they say, unavailable for comment.

Suffolk is where peanuts come from (and far better than the peanuts from Georgia!). The peanuts seem to have cross-fertilized the brains of the school administration.

Addendum:

Suffolk is “reconsidering” the policy.

Oddly, “reconsidering” implies that “considering” had previously occurred.

Spreading the Gunspell 0

Republican JesusRetired Marine and university professor Ed Palm has qualms.

One of the most maudlin themes of the Western melodrama is that of the callow young man who, intent on commanding respect, insists on wearing a gun. Johnny Cash’s 1958 hit “Don’t Take Your Guns to Town,” for instance, relates how one such would-be gunslinger comes to a bad end. I thought of Cash’s ballad recently when I learned that Liberty University — the Christian university founded in 1971 by Jerry Falwell in Lynchburg — now allows faculty, staff, students and visitors to carry concealed weapons on campus and in campus buildings.

Because Republican Jesus would have wanted it that way . . .
