Republican Family Values 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, Elliot D. Cohen takes a look at the likely effects of the recent spate of anti-LGBTQ legislation in Republican-controlled states. His conclusions are disturbing.

He makes three main points:

  • LGBTQ youth are twice as likely to entertain and attempt suicide as all other adolescents.
  • LGBTQ-based discrimination is a major risk factor for poor mental health and suicidality in LGBTQ youth.
  • Legislation that discriminates against LGBTQ people increases the likelihood of suicidality among LGBTQ youth.

An Unintentional Truth 2

The editorial board of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch found itself somewhat taken aback by the statements of Florida Governor DeSantis defending chattel slavery. Here’s a little bit from their editorial:

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is defending and doubling down upon new state teaching standards that claim American slavery had a silver lining in that it taught enslaved people useful skills.

What’s next? Suggesting that the Nazis’ horrendous wartime experiments on Jews weren’t entirely evil, because they yielded medical data?

Little did they expect that what they intended, in my opinion, as rhetorical hyperbole for emphasis would, within a matter of days, become a prophecy come true.

Dis Coarse Discourse 0

The coarseness is zooming. Here’s a snippet from the San Jose Mercury News reporting on the rise of persons “zoom-bombing” public meetings with hate speech:

As government officials moved to provide remote viewing options beginning in 2020, malicious hackers started “Zoom bombing” meetings across the Bay Area, from city council proceedings in Walnut Creek, San Jose, Richmond and elsewhere, to gatherings of agencies such as the South Bay’s Valley Transportation Authority. Attendees were shocked by sudden racial slurs, pornographic images and more. Political provocateurs and unscrupulous commenters have continued bypassing added security measures using access links and codes that are legally required to be available to the public.
