The Party of Law(lessness) and (Dis)order 0

LZ Granderson reflects of the Republican Party’s about face. A snippet (emphasis added):

What’s more surprising than my ambivalence toward the FBI is how quickly “law and order” Republicans have turned against the agency. Since the raid at Mar-a-Lago, the FBI is discovering what it must have felt like to be a Capitol Police officer.

Apparently for this era of conservatism, “back the blue” applies only when it benefits the red.

A University of Florida professor describes the stifling effect that Florida’s “Stop Woke Act” is having on him and his colleagues. A snippet; follow the link for more.

First, instructors of both student courses and employee trainings are afraid. Afraid of saying the wrong thing, being entangled in an investigation, and getting pulled away from the valuable work they do and love. As a result, many are now considering whether to include content they’ve taught for years, even though their expertise as educators and researchers tells them to include that content.

If your cult leader gets caught breaking the law, well, then, why not just make that law go away?

Words fail me.

The Unsound and the Furious 0

Noz explains why Donald Trump’s claim that he “secretly declassified” classified documents that he had no legal right to declassify is disconnected from reality and the rule of law.

But law and reason will make no difference to the Trumpettes, who are committed to the rule of flaw and the politics of hate.

We are in parlous times.

“A Divider, Not a Uniter” 0

Solomon Jones takes a close look at Donald Trump’s playbook and argues that sowing division is his go-to tactic. A snippet; follow the link for his reasoning.

It was division, after all, that allowed Trump to separate Americans into camps of “us” and “them.” After a years-long campaign of lies about Barack Obama’s birth certificate, Trump was swept into office by the same wave of widespread resentment that usually follows Black achievement. Whites who’d felt their power slipping away during Obama’s two-term presidency were reassured by Trump’s implicit promise that, by Making America Great Again, he would drag the country back to a time when a Black man wouldn’t dream of seeking power.

If that meant breaking norms or breaking laws, Trump’s followers were willing to look the other way.

Dropping the Mask 0

Michael in Norfolk argues that events at the recent CPAC convention highlight the venality of today’s Republican Party. Here’s a bit from his article:

The contrast from the days of the so-called country club Republicans of my youth and young adulthood could not be more stark. Things that would once have never been mentioned are now shouted and embraced publicly. Sadly, far too many older Republicans remain locked in a fantasy that their party has not morphed into something unrecognizable and down right ugly.

Still Rising Again after All These Years 0

Michael Paul Jackson points out that history–and knowledge and awareness of history–matters. A snippet:

Just as the Confederate States of America lost the Civil War but “won the peace” with effective Lost Cause propaganda, the KKK members, Nazis and other hatemongers in Charlottesville lost the battle over Confederate monuments in Charlottesville but could win their ideological war.

Bill Torpy explores how one gun manufacture promotes its portable phalluses. Here’s one little example; follow the link for more.

In May, right before a twisted 18-year-old entered an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, and killed 19 children and two adults with a Daniel Defense gun, the company posted an online advertisement it thought to be charming, thought-provoking or, most probably, attention-grabbing.

The ad showed a boy, maybe 4 years old, with a semiautomatic rifle in his lap, along with a Bible passage: “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
