“Pay No Attention to the Man behind the Curtain” 0

A group of super heroes, including Captain America, the Hulk, Thor, etc. confront Donald Trump and his acolytes, such as Mike Lindell, Steve Bannon, Sidney Powell, and so on. Captain America says,

In this particular case, it’s the men and women behind the curtain you have to worry about (as Sam and his crew noted in the previous post).

Misdirection Play, “It’s Just Politics” Dept. 0

At AL.com, Frances Coleman urges persons to reject the notion that holding seditionists accountable is somehow “just politics.” Here’s a bit; follow the link for the rest.

You might believe that this former president was so enraptured in his own ego that he saw this as just another reality television program. Maybe he believed that this was as fake as his fortune, business acumen and leadership.

It wasn’t fake. People were killed. And the rioters who stormed the Capitol were intent on killing leaders of the opposing party as well as the vice president.

It’s terrifying.

An acquaintance of mine, a really charming and smart fellow, suggests that “the other side” riots, too. The mayhem they create is condoned by media outlets like CNN and MSNBC, he adds.

But if any other group attempted to storm the U.S. Capitol, I somehow missed it.

That is the most poisonous legacy of Donald Trump.

If One Standard Is Good, Two Must Be Better 0

At the Portland Press-Herald, Victoria Hugo-Vidal takes a look at the Supreme Supremacist Court’s recent abrogation of Roe v. Wade. It is a thoughtful and well-reasoned article, but one bit leapt out at me as highlighting the misogyny and arrogance underlying that decision:

You’ll notice nobody ever proposes punishing men who get their jollies.

“But It’s the Only Possible Explanation” 0

University of Pennsylvania professor Donovan Schaefer analyzes the appeal of conspiracy theories. He notes that they have existed for centuries, but that this appears to be their golden age (which I would attribute to the internet and “social” media and persons who believe what they read on a computer screen simply because it’s on a computer screen, but that’s just me). Here’s a bit from his piece (emphasis added):

One of the most exciting parts of a conspiracy theory is that it makes everything makes sense. We all know the pleasure of solving a puzzle: the “click” of satisfaction when you complete a Wordle, crossword or sudoku. But of course, the whole point of games is that they simplify things. Detective shows are the same: All the clues are right there on the screen.

But what if the whole world were like that? In essence, that’s the illusion of conspiracy theory. All the answers are there, and everything fits with everything else. The big players are sinister and devious – but not as smart as you.

Democracy Plutocracy 0

A member of the European Parliament argues that the United States is a failing state.

His arguments are difficult to counter, as one of our two major political parties has dedicated itself, not to democracy, but to minority rule at any cost.

Mrs. Betty Bowers lampoons the Christofascists’ claim that “America is a Christian nation.”

Aside:

Religious fervor has waxed and waned over the course of America’s history, but seldom has America’s religious fervor seemed so poisonous and hate-full as it is today.

Twits on Twitter 0

Yet more racist twits, these ones reacting to Virginia State Senator Louise Lucas’s condemnation of the Supreme Supremacist Court’s overturning Roe v. Wade:

Lucas, who has amassed a strong following on Twitter, is no stranger to social media feuds — but this was different. These messages carried powerful images and words of racism and violence against Blacks, so Lucas, who is Black, reported them to the authorities. And now she has additional security officers when she attends public events.

“This is stuff I haven’t seen since” the civil rights movement, she said.

Denial Is Not Just a River in Egypt 0

It’s also a law in Florida.

Afterthought:

Denying history means never learning its lessons.

In this case, it is quite clear that those who would deny history also reject its lessons, because they are too busy still rising again after all these years.
