Vaccine Nation 0

At the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Kevin McDermott marvels at the stupid. A snippet:

. . . there’s really no debate about the facts. Fever-swamp hokum notwithstanding, the vaccines at this point have been taken by so many millions of people worldwide, with so few incidents of serious side effects, and with such irrefutable effectiveness against the worst plague to hit the world in a century, that there’s really no rational reason for qualified people to refuse them. There are only irrational reasons — and yet, vaccine rejection has somehow become a litmus test for one of America’s two major political parties.

As Farhad Manjoo points out, we live in parlous times. Here’s a bit of his article:

. . . if the assaults on democracy that occurred in America in 2021 had happened in another country, academics, diplomats and activists from around the world would be tearing their hair out over the nation’s apparent unraveling. If you were a reporter summing up this American moment for readers back home in Mumbai, India, Johannesburg or Jakarta, Indonesia, you’d have to ask whether the country is on the brink: A decade from now, will the world say that 2021 was the year the United States squandered its democracy?

Going to Extremes 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, Jeremy Sherman offers a lens for understanding extremists and extremism which I found well worth the read. Here’s a tiny bit:

To understand why people would become irresponsible, irrational, extremist jerks, it’s worth appreciating the power they gain by it.

Michael in Norfolk notes a new Republican strategy: fanning male grievance. Here’s a bit; follow the link for the rest.

Anything that criticizes toxic masculinity, the mistreatment of women, and anti-gay and anti-transgender bigotry is labeled an attack on males. This theme works hand in glove with Republican efforts to fan white anxiety and fears of lost privilege and is aided and abetted by many evangelicals “leaders” who preach about the subservient role women should display towards men.

Still Rising Again after All These Years 0

The Atlanta-Journal Constitution reports on a long-time white supremacist, ex-KKK leader, and convicted felon running for local office in Georgia.

The report points out that, though not a common phenomenon, this is also not an isolated one in these Trumpled times. Given the increased boldness of white supremacists, bigots, and haters, I think the article is well worth a read. Here’s a tiny bit:

Even so, he (the candidate, Chester Doles–ed.) believes he can win running as a Republican and an ardent supporter of former President Donald Trump. His campaign signs carry the warning “Stop Socialism. Save America,” a slogan borrowed from controversial U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who represents Georgia’s deeply conservative 14th District.

(snip)

Jennifer Kavanagh, a senior political scientist with the RAND Corp. and an expert on political disinformation, said candidates with Doles’ background have good reasons to see an opening in mainstream politics. The rapid spread of disinformation on social media, a hyperpolarized political environment and the increase power of partisan rhetoric have created fertile ground for such campaigns, she said.

“If You Can Keep It” 0

Writing at the Idaho State Journal, Wayne Schow reveals that he is less than optimistic. Here’s a bit; follow the link for the rest:

Until recently I, like most Americans, have assumed blithely that the bedrock of our Constitution and our governmental traditions would guarantee the ongoing functionality of our democracy. I’m now persuaded we can make no such confident assumption. The Constitution is only a document, no better than its caretakers, and after what I’ve seen in the past several years, I worry about the dependability of those caretakers.

(snip)

In 2016 with faulty judgment we elevated an unprincipled, incompetent man to the presidency — and we have paid dearly. He did unspeakable damage to our country—and continues to do so. But he could not have done it without legions of enablers. Millions of them still hang on his words.

Michael in Norfolk connects the dots. A nugget:

. . . with the election of Barack Obama to the White House a torent of racism swept the nation as self-serving politicians and right wing talking heads perceived racism as a way to solidify their base and/or gain viewership.
