Bob Molinaro, sportswriter extraordinaire:

Hoop du jour: It’s commendable, but not surprising, that only one or two out of all the WNBA players have not been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Women are just smarter. Also more considerate of others. This is only the most recent time the socially conscious WNBA has raised its game.

In contrast: Speaking for the dumbest sex, Buffalo Bills anti-vaxxer, anti-masker Cole Beasley tweeted, “I may die of COVID, but I’d rather die actually living.” What a drama queen. One who sings in the key of me. The comic irony of NFL players avoiding vaccine needles is that in their line of work, they get shot up more often than race horses.

At The Denver Post, the University of Colorado’s Seth Masket runs the numbers:

Vaccinations are a better predictor of state voting patterns in 2020 than education, racial composition, or almost any other demographic factor. And while voting patterns don’t really shift much from election to election, vaccination rates are a better predictor of the 2020 election than the 2000 election is. That is, if you want to know how a state voted in 2020, you can get more information from knowing its current vaccination rate than from knowing how it voted 20 years ago.

The Manatee County, Florida, government shut down because of an outbreak of COVID-19. A snippet (emphasis added):

On Monday, one of four IT staffers who had been hospitalized with COVID-19 died, according to Hopes. A fifth IT staffer who went to the doctor on Wednesday, died at home Thursday from COVID-19.

One staffer in the department who worked closely with the other five and didn’t contract the coronavirus was vaccinated. All five who contracted the virus were known not to be vaccinated . . . .

At The Hartford Courant, a Connecticut resident who wintered in Florida worries that we all are turning into Florida Man. A snippet:

Even though I’m back in Connecticut, I remain in a state of shock. I’ve heard fellow New Englanders praise Florida’s defiance of safety measures during the height of the epidemic. I’ve heard some agree with Florida’s governor (a likely presidential candidate) prohibiting cruise lines from requiring passengers to show proof of vaccination to ensure the safety of all travelers. Others have said flight attendants “have it coming” when airline passengers attack them for enforcing mask mandates.

And they keep getting fiendlier.

The Federal Aviation Administration told The Washington Post this week that it has received about 2,900 reports of unruly passenger behavior since Jan. 1. Roughly 2,200 of those involved passengers who would not comply with the federal mandate to wear a face covering. The agency identified potential violations in 446 of those cases and has started enforcement action in 42.

“There tends to be greater incidents where you are flying out of a place where local and state leaders have said that the pandemic is a hoax, that masks are not necessary, all of those things,” she (Sara Nelson, international president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA–ed.) said.
