Vaccine Nation 0

Laurie Roberts reports on the Arizona state legislature’s decision to convene a coterie of COVID charlatans “examine federal, state and local efforts to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic.” She is not sanguine.

Here’s a tiny bit from her article; follow the link for her reasoning.

Looking at the lineup of elected leaders and “expert panelists” — not to mention the cryptic callout to QAnon — I’m guessing this august study group won’t be examining the nexus between Arizona’s low vaccination rate and our highest-in-the-nation death rate. One that rivals Peru.

A Notion of Immigrants 0

The Portland Press-Herald’s Victoria Hugo-Vidal muses on a proposal to deny MaineCare benefits to sick persons if they are not U. S. citizens. (MaineCare a form of insurance run by the state of Maine.) A snippet:

I don’t have a firm position on any of the bills before the Legislature; I’m not going to tell you how you or anyone else should vote. However, it does seem to me that denying someone who would otherwise qualify for MaineCare coverage, who meets income and residency requirements, purely on the basis of citizenship … doesn’t make a ton of sense.

I think a lot of the knee-jerk opposition to it comes down to racism and nativism . . . .

Methinks she makes some excellent points.

The Unbelievers 0

Rebecca Watson discusses a study that indicates that, when a scientific journal and individual scientists endorsed Biden over Trump, Trump, Trump supporters reacted by trusting scientists (and science) less. Here’s a bit of what she says:

The truth does not matter to these people, because Tucker Carlson already told them something and they’ve built their entire personalities around it. They are, for the most part, unreachable by facts alone. It’s not impossible to change these people’s minds, but we absolutely will not find a statistically significant result by throwing reality at them and seeing if they immediately change their minds. About ANYTHING that is even tangentially related to politics, which is anything that the talking heads tell them on Newsmax.

Debtification 0

At the Idaho State Journal, Jesse Robison makes the case that our health care system does one thing very, very well.

Dr. Rishi Manchanda said it well, “We have a health care system almost perfectly designed to create debt.”

And create debt it does: According to a February 2022 Consumer Credit Report, Americans are carrying $88 billion in medical debt, and that number is significantly underreported. Over 20 percent of U.S. adults have medical debt. Excessive medical costs are the primary cause of bankruptcy in America partially caused by deceptive Swiss cheese insurance policies.
