(Warning: Short commercial at the end.)

Aside:

I still remember how lousy I felt when I had 10-day measles back in the olden days, a long time ago, when I was a young ‘un. I missed over a week of fourth grade, and my mind retains a snapshot of my looking out a window at a rainy spring day as my fever spiked.

It appalls me that some parents today are so ignorant and stupid as to wish that on their children because they believe lies spouted by equally ignorant and stupid persons motivated solely by a political agenda.

Speaking of ignorant and stupid, we are a society of ignorant and stupid.

John Geyman explains what “Medicare Advantage” should more properly be described as Medicare Disadvantage.

Here’s one of the reasons he cites; follow the link for the rest.

Private insurers regularly profiteer by getting chart reviews of enrollees to find additional diagnoses in order to increase their risk scores and overstate the severity of their illnesses, then “upcoding” their bills to gain higher reimbursements. Through this kind of risk adjustment, Medicare Advantage plans have cost taxpayers and the federal government $143 billion more than traditional Medicare over the past 12 years.

The Disinformation Superhighway 0

At the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Brad Baldwin makes a persuasive case that the flood of mis- and disinformation on “social” media is a major reason why persons vote against their own (and the country’s) best interests.

I commend his piece to your attention.

Northeastern University runs the COVID numbers and finds that “the median death rate for counties with the strongest Republican leaning was between 40% and 300% higher than the counties that leaned Democrat,” because, to be blunt, (these are my words, not theirs) some persons chose science and some persons chose stupid.

A snippet (emphasis added); follow the link for the rest.

. . . the COVID-19 pandemic is different from past pandemics, he (Professor Mauricio Santillana of Northeastern–ed.) says. Typically, epidemiological models don’t even take into account the political leaning of communities. In this case, Santillana and the rest of the research team set out to document the vital role that political affiliation played in the devastation of the pandemic.

As part of their research, the team created models based on death counts from the country’s 2,000 counties that looked at factors ranging from socioeconomic status to obesity. Even when controlling for every other variable, the team found that political affiliation factored heavily in the death rate.

We are a society of stupid.

The writer of a letter to the editor of the New Orleans Advocate argues forcefully that anti-VAXXers do not have the right to endanger the populace. Here’s a bit:

The value of vaccines in reducing the deaths of U.S. citizens in a major way is not a debatable issue, if one is concerned with the truth. And Republicans’ right to purposeful ignorance about simple public health measures should not include the right to expose our communities to many extra deaths.

An anti-VAXX twit tweets his or her* way into a bit of mess with his employer.

Aside:

I really don’t get these fools who claim vaccines don’t work. I can’t decide whether they are willfully blind or just plain stupid. Or maybe just plain willfully stupid.

They deny four centuries of history because what happened conflicts with what they want to believe.
