“Freedom for Me, but Not for Thee” 0

David Frum elucidates; follow the link for the full article (emphasis added):

The QAnon-curious Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene expressed the new mentality when she took to Facebook to denounce vaccine passports as “corporate communism.” It sounded crazy. But if you understand that she interprets communism to mean “any interference in the right of people like me to do whatever we want, regardless of the rights of others”—then, yeah, the property rights of corporations will indeed look to her like a force of communism.

Disservice Charge 0

The piper, the piper is calling–to be paid.

In the continuing fallout from the “Kraken” election suits, Wisconsin is seeking hundreds of thousands of dollars in attorneys’ fees from Donald Trump and Sidney Powell for their attempts to overturn the state’s election results via lawsuits that were “frivolous, dilatory, and without merit.”

Follow the link for a discussion of the merits of the case.

Three Parts Suppression, One Part Kabuki? 0

At the Washington Monthly, David Atkins suggests there is a second element to Republican voter suppression attempts such as the recent law passed in Georgia. He suggests that, in addition to wanting to suppress likely Democratic votes, Republicans feel constrained by Trump’s “Big Lie” to show the Trumpettes in their base that they are taking real action against the mythic fraud which Trump continues to allege.

I think his theory is worth a look.

Gutting Out the Vote 0

Republican Elephant says to black man,

Jamelle Bouie comments. A snippet:

Convinced, after Trump’s defeat in the 2020 presidential election, that there is no way to win the White House in a diverse electorate with high turnout, Republicans have made it their mission to restrict the vote as much as possible.

Mobbed Up 0

At The Roanoke Times, John Freivalds suggests that mob-like behavior has played a larger role in American history that we are willing to recognize. It’s an interesting take; here’s a snippet:

We constantly witness mobs at large sporting events as an example of mob herd mentality at violent football games. Where else do beer-bellied men deem it OK to stand screaming, half naked with their faces and torsos covered in paint? Think about that horned half-naked shaman during the Capitol riots, he would have fit in perfectly at an NFL game. Most sports fans would not do these things on their own yet once they are in a crowd, they take on collective mob mood and action.

Freedom of Screech 0

The Orlando Sentinel’s Scott Maxwell finds Florida legislators’ attempt to bend Twitter and Facebook to their will to be–er–somewhat problematical. Here’s a tiny bit of his article; follow the link for the rest.

Gov. Ron DeSantis and GOP lawmakers — angry that Twitter banned Donald Trump for violating its policies on spreading conspiracies, glorifying violence and sharing falsehoods — are trying to prevent social media companies from doing the same thing to them.

They want to force social media companies to leave untouched any post any politician ever shares — no matter how vile or false.

One legislator described the bill as a dream come true for “Nazis and child molesters and pedophiles.” Then he voted for it.
