“B-B-But No Other Explanation Makes Sense” 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, David Ludden explores recent research as to the varied reasons why some persons adhere to conspiracy theories that are plainly absurd in the light of pesky things like “facts,” “knowledge,” and “logic.” Here’s one element he cites; follow the link for the full discussion.

For instance, people who believe the Earth is flat or that the government is controlled by lizard people from outer space don’t derive any sort of social identity from their beliefs. Rather, they see themselves as special because they’re privy to knowledge that non-believers don’t have or are unwilling to accept.

Tripping on the Guilting 0

Bill Nemitz reports on what happened when, on a lark, he signed up for the “Team Trump” mailing list. It was not quite what he expected. A snippet:

Curious about what they were up to, I clicked on the “find out more” button, which prompted a request for my email address, which I provided.

What I expected was a window into the messaging being deployed by the Trumps to propel the president to a second term – increasingly unlikely as that appears to be. What I got was a guilt trip, day after day, for not doing as I’m told.

The Cancellator-in-Chief 0

In an article at the Inky exploring the grammatical and psychological (psycho-grammatical? gramma-psychological?) reason the phrase, “cancel culture,” has caught on so quickly, Jeffrey Barg notes the irony of Donald Trump’s recent screed against “cancel culture.” Here’s a nugget; follow the link for the rest.

There’s plenty of irony in Trump calling out cancel culture when, for 14 seasons as host of The Apprentice, he swiftly canceled hundreds of contestants with his most famous catchphrase, “You’re fired.” And in separate articles this week, the Washington Post’s Catherine Rampell and CNN’s Daniel Dale chronicled the many times that Donald Trump has recommended cancellation of everything from NBC to Joe Scarborough to Karl Rove to Apple.

Nor, for that matter, does it mean that anyone is obligated to give a damn about what you spoke.
