The Lies of the Land 0

Will Bunch points out that it’s starting all over again once more. A snippet:

And the shocking events of the last 100 hours or so — beginning with the provocative and impulsive President Trump-ordered assassination of an Iranian general — have been like a PTSD flashback on acid of blatantly lying government officials and chest-thumping warmongering TV pundits, on top of the dull ache of realization that that for six decades now you’ve watched the United States and its leaders learn absolutely nothing.

Behind that Curtain 0

In The Roanoke Times, James Ballou looks behind the smokescreen of Republican rhetoric to discern the essence of today’s Republican Party.

A nugget:

For the Republican Party, the stoking of the racist, homophobic, 2nd amendment and religious fears of the poor and lower middle classes is only a means to an end. The true goal is to grow the riches of the wealthy. However, to do so they need the votes of rural poor and lower middle class whites. The Republican Party is now composed of corporations, the greed driven super wealthy and by a much larger group of dissatisfied whites who are afraid they will be unable to maintain their vision of a status quo and who have become conditioned to blame people of color, other religions and sexual orientations for their perceived plight.

Leaving the Polity Agogue 0

Eli Whitney reminds us that, of all things the Founders feared, the demagogue was what they feared the most. A snippet:

This destructive risk of demagogues is one reason the 55 framers of the Constitution adopted the power of impeachment during the historic convention of 1787.

They believed uniformly that some men, though elected by the people, would be temperamentally incapable of serving the public interest under the Constitution. Therefore, they offered Congress the remedy of impeachment and removal from office.

The Credulous 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, Bobby Azarian probes the Evangelical “Christians” willingness to swallow Donald Trump’s particular type of hogwash, despite the hog’s being in plain sight. It’s an interesting read.

Here is a snippet (emphasis added):

One reason Trump supporters believe him comes from a basic fact about the brain: it takes more mental effort to reject an idea as false than to accept it as true. In other words, it’s easier to believe than to not.

(snip)

For Christian fundamentalists, being taught to suppress critical thinking begins at a very early age. It is the combination of the brain’s vulnerability to believing unsupported facts and aggressive indoctrination that create the perfect storm for gullibility. Due to the brain’s neuroplasticity, or ability to be sculpted by lived experiences, evangelicals literally become hardwired to believe far-fetched statements.
