Recount Reveries 0

Thursday at our Drinking Liberally gathering, we agreed that Chris Stolle was correct in requesting a recount over a margin of 24 votes.

We also agreed that it would be most delicious if the recount were to increase Nancy Guy’s victory margin.

Welcome to the delicious.

A Question of Identity 0

David discusses the fallacy of designating Judaism a “nationality” and how it may feed certain tropes of anti-Semitism.

(Warning: Commercial starts at the six-minute mark. I have no knowledge of the product being advertised. Despite the commercial, I think David’s points on the topic are worth including the video.)

The Bully’s Pulpit 0

Paul Lewis reflects on Donald Trump’s use of “jeer pressure” and its appeal to his acolytes. A snippet:

. . . if you assume that humor in general is positive and beneficial, and if you have never watched one of Trump’s frequent rallies, then you are missing the constant laughter from the audience that signals their amusement and approval (at Trump’s frequent use of ridicule–ed.).

The Acolytes 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, Dinesh Sharma interviews Dan McAdams, author of The Strange Case of Donald J. Trump, a Psychological Reckoning. In the interview, they explore the hold that Trump seems to have over his diehard followers.

I commend it to your attention. Here’s a snippet of McAdams response to a question about whether Trump might have some form of personality disorder (emphasis added):

There is no diagnostic label that captures his unique blend of attributes and orientations. Among the most interesting features of Trump’s inimitable personality are (1) his peculiar form of extraversion-based charisma, (2) his startling lack of an animating life narrative in his own mind to make sense of who he is and how he came to be, and (3) his belief, shared unconsciously by a percentage of his supporters, that he is not “a person” – he is more than a person, like a superhero, like a primal or mythic force, but less than a person, too, in that he is not held morally accountable in the same way that other persons are.

It Doesn’t Add Up 0

At the Hartford Courant, Thomas Cangelosi does the math. A snippet:

Indeed, in a case of life imitating art, I thought the Republican defense of the president seemed to come out of the pages of George Orwell’s dystopian novel 1984.

In particular, when Ambassador Gordon Sondland said he “surmised,” based on the logic of 2+2=4, that President Trump withheld military aid from Ukraine in exchange for an investigation into the 2016 elections, the President’s defenders that seemed to insist instead that 2+2=5.
