All That Was Old Is New Again 0

Dick Polman skewers Donald Trump’s “red scare” tactics, in which anyone to the left of the far right is getting tagged a “socialist.”

Indeed, the fright-wing freakout about “socialism” likely has little salience in our current era; the Trump-GOP plutocracy has widened the gap between the rich and everyone else and has done nothing for the anxious middle class. Trump at this point is arguably the worst person to champion capitalism and equate it with freedom.

Aside:

I suspect that Donald Trump has no idea what “socialism” is other than a great bogey word.

Steeley Eyes 0

Der Spiegel digs deep into the background and contents of the Steele Dossier. A snippet:

Steele’s Russia dossier lies at the heart of the scandal. It reads today like a preview of everything that has happened since then. Many of the names that dominate the Trump-Russia affair appeared for the first time in the report, like Aras Agalarov, for example, a Russian property mogul. There’s also Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen, former campaign adviser Carter Page, Trump’s former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, and Rosneft Chairman Igor Ivanovich Sechin. They all appear in Steele’s report — and they’ve all become important for Robert Mueller’s investigation.

Using the presidential ambitions of the Man Who Ruined Coffee as a starting point, Paul Krugman examines what he calls the “fanatical centrists.” A nugget:

. . . the hallmark of fanatical centrism is the determination to see America’s left and right as equally extreme, no matter what they actually propose.
