Supreme Court Jester 0

As Barney Frank once said, “‘Moderate’ Republicans are the ones who aren’t there when you need them.”

Afterthought:

For some reason, this feels more like a coup than an appointment.

Remember, experiments fail, even noble ones.

Some are speculating (that, wistfully wishing) that, if the Kavanaugh nomination fails, a slightly more moderate candidate may be nominated. I think that’s–er–less than realistic.

I think Noz nails it (follow the link for the context):

. . . the theory assumes that Donald Trump is emotionally capable of appointing a compromise candidate. I honestly don’t think he has it in him. He will keep appointing rightwingers in his usual dominance display, even if they repeatedly get voted down . . . .

Trump is all about winning, and, in his definition of winning, there is no such thing as “win-win.” The other side must lose for him to consider himself to have won.

The Entitlement Society Meets the Privatization Scam 0

Dr. Brandy Lee explores the intermix of power, politics, and pathology manifest in the Trumpling. A snippet (emphasis added):

Currently, our neoliberal ideology of privatization has created a ripe ground for pathology. Military capability affords a means for ensuring and exercising power, both domestically and internationally, and thus is a favorite area of expansion for pathological leaders and their vulnerable followers.

In the U.S., a pathological leader is now seeking to shape the judicial system through the nomination of a Supreme Court justice who not only has a record of siding almost exclusively with power, but has expressly signaled that a sitting president cannot be indicted during his term in office (Gerstein, 2018).

Thom’s caller suggests that prosecutor Rachel Mitchell, who the Republicans on the Judiciary Committed used to question Christine Blasey Ford, was a “token hire.”

Methinks the thought is worth a ponder.

Kavanaugh’s Cavalcade of Cozenage 0

The Boston Globe corrals Brett Kavanaugh’s flock of duplicity. Here’s some samples; follow the link for the list and the papers conclusion.

  • Kavanaugh was asked if he was involved with a scheme to steal Democratic staff e-mails related to judicial confirmations. He lied about it. E-mails showed that he was involved.
  • In 2006, Kavanaugh was asked if he was involved in the controversial nomination of federal Judge Charles Pickering. He lied about that too and said he was not.
  • In 2006, Kavanaugh was asked about his role in the nomination of William Haynes, the Pentagon general counsel involved in creating the Bush administration’s interrogation policies. He lied about that.
