A Palmer Reading 0

Robert Reich, in a longer piece about Donald Trump’s recent remarks about Arnold Palmer, reports an item which leapt out at me. He notes that Palmer was no fan of Trump. Here’s that excerpt:

Arnold Palmer’s daughter told The Sporting News in 2018 that the golf legend was so incensed by what he saw as Trump’s lack of civility that he made noises of disgust when Trump appeared on the television “like he couldn’t believe the arrogance and crudeness of this man who was the nominee of the political party that he believed in.” She added, “My dad had no patience for people who demean other people in public. He was appalled by Trump’s lack of civility and what he began to see as Trump’s lack of character.”

Paul Valéry:

The folly of mistaking a paradox for a discovery, a metaphor for a proof, a torrent of verbiage for a spring of capital truths, and oneself for an oracle, is inborn in us.

All the News that Fits 0

Farron reports on a news nothingburger and wonders why the “news” sites that promoted it haven’t bothered to retract it.

Of course, we know the answer to Farron’s wonder.

Those sites report all the news that fits.

If it doesn’t fit, they don’t report it.

When playing with a gun becomes gun play . . . .

Geiger told police “she and Osborne were engaged in harmless banter when he jokingly requested she shoot him,” police wrote in the sworn statement.

Geiger said she thought her “firearm was empty, pointed the weapon at Osborne and pulled the trigger.”

Too many guns. Too much stupid.

Medicare Disadvantage 0

Medicare “Advantage” plans aren’t. A snippet from Truthout’s report:

Last year, more MA members than expected used their benefits to get necessary medical care. One might assume that companies would expect beneficiaries to use health care services. But after years of making outsized profits, the insurance companies that own these plans are reacting to this by downsizing plans, cutting benefits, increasing copays, and raising prescription drug deductibles. In other words, Medicare Advantage beneficiaries are being penalized for using the health care that they pay for.

Methinks they should be renamed “Medicare Take Advantage.”

From the git-go, “Medicare Advantage” was a con and a scam to allow private companies to suckle at the public teat.
