The Disinformation Superhighway 0

El Reg points out that, for every effect, there is a cause (emphasis added). Here’s the lede:

Since Elon Musk bought Twitter nearly two years ago – a $44 billion acquisition he tried to pull out of – the mogul has driven a narrative that moderation of the microblogging website disproportionately targeted conservatives, libertarians, and Trump supporters.

A scientific paper published in the journal Nature this week confirms that was the case, with justification. The groups more likely to be subjected to moderation were also more likely to share misinformation from low-quality news sites.

One more time, “social” media isn’t.

Trish Carter-Goodheart, a Democratic House candidate for Seat A in the district, said in a press release that after a question was asked about discrimination and whether it exists in Idaho, she said that, “just because someone hasn’t personally experienced discrimination, doesn’t mean it’s not happening. Racism and discrimination are real issues here in Idaho, as anyone familiar with our state’s history knows.”

Sen. Dan Foreman, R-Viola, reportedly responded to Carter-Goodheart, “I’m so sick and tired of this liberal bull (expletive). Why don’t you go back to where you came from?”

Per the news report, Trish Carter-Goodheart is of Native American descent. Her ancestors were here a millennium before Foreman’s.

The stupid. It burns, and the hate, well, it metastasizes.

Permission To Prevaricate? 0

The editorial board of the Las Vega Sun points out that J. D. Vance seems to think that fact-checking is censorship, which, I guess, sort of makes sense if you are a lying liar who doesn’t want to get called out for telling your lies.

Molly Ivins:

When politicians start talking about large groups of their fellow Americans as ‘enemies,’ it’s time for a quiet stir of alertness. Polarizing people is a good way to win an election, and also a good way to wreck a country.

Yet another “responsible gun owner” exposes his portable phallus to a child.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Toomey and the victim were working on a vehicle in the driveway when Toomey placed an unsecured gun on the front steps of the house. A 3-year-old family member found the firearm and discharged it, striking the victim in the arm. The injured man was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Death on the Nile, starring Peter Ustinov as Hercule Poirot.

Even if you are not a mystery buff and a Hercule Poirot fan, as I am, it’s worth viewing for the cast, which includes David Niven, Angela Lansbury, Bette Davis, Maggie Smith, and George Kennedy, among others. And much of it was filmed in Egypt, so the scenery is authentic.

I saw it on Tubi.

Vaccine Nation 0

Rebecca Watson discusses how the anti-VAXX movement is endangering everyone. An excerpt from her discussion of a study reported in The Lancet:

But now back to the bad news: that “trend” I said they noticed? They found that the number of people who contracted measles during that time period were MORE likely to be vaccinated, compared to previous decades. The number of vaccinated people getting measles TRIPLED, but why?

The models showed that the protection offered by the vaccine was superb, so how is this happening? Because of herd immunity. If 95% of people were immunized, we wouldn’t see these breakout infections, but in England during that time period only 85% of kids got both doses. That drop of just ten percentage points tripled the number of cases showing up in vaccinated people, even for a vaccine with an incredibly high level of effectiveness, which should give you some insight into why we’re still dealing with COVID-19, considering that only about 80% of Americans ever got even a single vaccination for it.
