P. D. James:

She had always believed–somewhat to her surprise–that God existed but was unconvinced that he was moved by the worship of man or by the tribulations and extraordinary vagaries and antics of the creation He had set in being.

I commend to your attention Harry Shearer’s interview with Gary Marcus on this week’s episode of Le Show about AI and Silicon Valley’s reckless over-hyping of its capabilities.

The interview starts at about the 28 minute mark and lasts a little less than half an hour.

Thom points out that racial hate seems to be the only strategy that Trump and Vance have left.

He also notes that their racist tactics are–er–not unprecedented in America’s history.

“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” (Updated) 0

The stupid.

The shot rang out on September 15 inside the Costco location near Kalamazoo on Century Avenue.

The firearm was inside a woman’s purse when it went off.

The gun’s legal owner was shot in her hand, according to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office.

It burns.

Addendum:

The gun that went off inside a Costco near Kalamazoo was a Michigan State Police officer’s state-issued service weapon, authorities say.

The MSP officer, whose name was not released, was off duty Sunday when the gun “accidentally discharged” from inside her purse at the Costco on Century Avenue off Michigan Avenue in Oshtemo Township.

Words fail me.

On second thought, no, they don’t.

Guns do not “accidentally” discharge, but they can, indeed, “negligently” discharge.

“Accidentally” and “negligently” are not synonyms.

A Notion of Immigrants 0

At The Colorado Sun, Mike Littwin debunks de bunk. A snippet; follow the link for context.

And you can probably say the same about the slightly more complicated situation in Aurora (Colorado–ed.). If you watched the debate, or just saw the clips, you already know that Trump, citing Aurora by name, says migrants “are taking over the towns, they are taking over buildings, they are going in violently. These are the people (Kamala Harris) and Biden have been letting into our country. And they’re destroying our country.”

(snip)

Whether the apartment buildings in question — housing mostly Central American migrants — are dilapidated and run down and have been cited over the years for a long list of code violations is not up for debate. It’s true. Rep. Jason Crow, who represents Aurora in Congress, called the conditions “squalid” in a tweet while saying the gang issues are “grossly exaggerated.”

And also not up for debate is whether Aurora is a war zone or a migrant wasteland. That’s simply false.

Aside:

Methinks the reason Republicans lie so much about so many things is that truth is not on their side.

The Quandary 0

Man: As a freethinking political independent, I simply can't decide who to vote for. Sparky: Really. Well, let's think this through. Donald Trump is an elderly rage-filled narcissist in obvious decline. He's apparently unable to string together a single coherent sentence without going off on bizarre tangents. He's a convicted felon and adjudicated rapist who incited a literal insurrection. He's surrounded by extremist freaks, like the deranged 9/11 conspiracy theorist he took to the 9/11 memorial. He and his vile running mate are currently whipping up another round of anti-immigrant hysteria based on debunked internet rumors. It's already inspired bomb threats and will probably get someone killed. His role models are authoritarians and dictators. He name-checked Viktor Orban during the debate. He's made it clear that if he gets back into office, democracy as wwe know it is this country is pretty much over. Man: Sure--but I hear that Kamala Harris flip-flopped on some issues and stuff. Sparky: How reassuring to know that this election may ultimately hinge on thoughtful, deliberative voters such as yourself.

Dion Lefler looks at the flood of mis- and disinformation flooding primarily “social” but also other media following last week’s presidential debate and concludes (emphasis added0:

We don’t need less fact-checking in our political system. We need exponentially more of it. An ill-informed democracy is not a democracy at all, it’s just mob rule.

As I have noted before, Richard Nixon’s southern strategy has come full circle and consumed the Republican Party.

It is now the party of the New Secesh.

And, again, politeness becomes child’s play . . . .

On Saturday night, 8-year-old Phillip’e Woodward accidentally shot and killed himself with a loaded shotgun he was playing with in his grandmother’s house.

One more time, “responsible gun owner” is an oxymoron.

The Trumpettes are telling the lie that Haitians in Springfield, Ohio, are stealing geese. In a story about that lie and those lying liars, C&L’s John Amato, almost in passing, decodes de code:

By the way, their are approximately 11 million Haitians. Even if we imported their entire country into 330 million Americans, it would do nothing to turn us, as you say, into a third world country.

“Third world country” is also another code word for White Replacement Theory.
