Constable Topinka (aka Sergeant Topinka), which follows the (mis)adventures of a self-important, but somewhat–er–less than competent police officer in a small town in the mountains of northeastern Czechia. As near as I can tell from the credits, it is a cooperative effort of Czechian and Slovakian television networks.

The episodes I’m watching are dubbed in English, without subtitles. Frankly, the dubbing is not great, but the stories are an absolute hoot and a lot of fun.

I’m watching it on Tubi, but a web search indicates that’s it’s available on a number of streaming platforms.

The Invalid Syllogism 0

Michael in Norfolk is perplexed.

I truly cannot understand the total and seemingly deliberate blindness of the MAGA base that mistakes Trump’s railing against those they hate – racial minorities, gays, the foreign born and independent women – as proof he gives the slightest damn about them.

More perplexity at the link.

A Storm of Lies and Lying Liars 0

The Charlotte Observer debunks de bunk being spread (mostly) by right-wing nutbags about the aftermath of hurricane Helene.

Here’s one bit (emphasis in the original). Follow the link for more lies by lying liars.

Rumor: The government created the hurricane

Facts: Helene formed from an organized band of showers and thunderstorms in the Gulf of Mexico, the National Hurricane Center in Miami reported. Rumors that the government created the storm were fueled by U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s tweet late Thursday that “Yes they can control the weather. It’s ridiculous for anyone to lie and say it can’t be done.”

Dick Polman thinks you ain’t seen nuttin’ yet.

The Disinformation Superhighway 0

El Reg points out that, for every effect, there is a cause (emphasis added). Here’s the lede:

Since Elon Musk bought Twitter nearly two years ago – a $44 billion acquisition he tried to pull out of – the mogul has driven a narrative that moderation of the microblogging website disproportionately targeted conservatives, libertarians, and Trump supporters.

A scientific paper published in the journal Nature this week confirms that was the case, with justification. The groups more likely to be subjected to moderation were also more likely to share misinformation from low-quality news sites.

One more time, “social” media isn’t.
