The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gene Collier takes at look at the behavior of the Republican majority in the House of Representatives, particularly as regards aid to Ukraine. He is not sanguine. Here’s a tiny bit from his article (emphasis added):

But for six months, while Ukraine fought and suffered day and night, we had minority rule right here in the arsenal of democracy, minority rule by a shabby cadre of wag-the-dog Republican nutbags who think statecraft is a video game where their character jockeys for position on Fox News to gain talking points.

The Search for the Scream 0

Yesterday, I climbed my stairs and heard a high-pitched screaming sound that came from I knew not where, but it seemed to be coming from my room.

I entered my room, but could not locate its source. It seemed to come from everywhere.

I went to the breaker box and opened the breaker for my room and the sound went away, proving it came from my room.

I closed the breaker and the sound came back, still seeming to come from everywhere.

Republican Thought Police, Reprise 0

Michael Paul Williams relates how the Republican Thought Police came after a girl scout because they didn’t like that she campaigned against their censorship. A snippet, quoting the Girl Scout herself:

“Honestly at first I just started laughing,” recalled Lindley, a senior at Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School who’s headed to Georgia Tech to study computer science.

“It’s kind of hilarious. For me, it’s very ironic that they decided to censor my project that’s meant to fight censorship.”

Title: Gettysburg Disgress. Image: Donald Trump wearing a 18th Century MAGA top hat speaks: Golf score! Seven years ago, my father's money brought on this continent a new notion, conceived in insanity, and dedicated to the Tweet that all billionaire men are created superior. I'm sorry the Union won, honestly. This cemetery is wasted. It would make a fantastice beautiful golf course . . . .

If One Standard Is Good, Two Must Be Better 0

Interviewer: Joining us now is our regular guest, the widely read pundit who is very concerted about freedom of speech on campua. Pundit Guy: Every time a free-thinking contrarian who simply wants to ask questions is invited to speak at a campus, there are protests. Why are these pampered snowflakes so terrified of opposing points of view? We cannot allow the censorious left to silence these iconoclastic perspectives. The free exchange of unpopular ideas is a foundational principle of our nation. Interviewer: I see. Well, on a related note, more than 100 Columbia students were just arreasted for peacefully protesting the war in Gaza. Pundit Guy: Good! They are very annoying and their opinions are bad and wrong. Other students should not be forced to listen to their nonsensical drivel. These trouble-making provocateurs deserve to be expelled from school and blackblisted from future employment, if you ask me. Interviewer: But you remain staunchly opposed to cancel culture. Pundit Guy: Absolutely. It is a scourge on our society. Interviewer: Okay, then. Thank you for sharing your principled view, Pundit Guy. Pundit Guy: Anytime.

The Establishmentarian 0

At the Des Moines Register, Rekha Basu decodes de code. A snippet (emphasis added):

In signing her “Religious Freedom Restoration Act” into law, Gov. Kim Reynolds ironically declared, “The right of religious freedom is endowed upon us by our creator — not government.” But putting government into religion is exactly what she did , and not to promote religious tolerance or core teachings such as loving our neighbors and serving those in need.

The law allows people to cite their religious beliefs to discriminate against others, even in nonsecular, civil society.

Still Rising Again after All These Years 0

Sam and the crew skewer racists’ claims that somehow racists are discriminated against because they are called out for being racist.

Afterthought:

I remember when my father, who grew up under Jim Crow, as did I, said to me late in his life, “I’m glad those days are gone.”

Well, those days–or, more properly, the hatred and bigotry and greed and exploitation (read “theft of labor”) that created them–are not gone, though they may have been slightly in eclipse.

Over half a century ago, Richard Nixon’s odious “Southern Strategy” invited racists to join his political party. Now that “Southern Strategy” has come full circle and consumed Nixon’s party, so that today we have a political party dedicated to bringing back Jim Crow.
