Suckered by the Algorithm 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, Bill Sullivan offers yet more evidence that “social” media isn’t, particular for the young. Here’s a bit of his article:

Studies have shown that social media use, especially among younger people, increases materialism—a drive to accumulate and flaunt money and possessions. Such a mindset implies that external goods like Italian sports cars, Cartier watches, or gourmet dining are signs of a person’s status. Materialists gauge their own worth—and the worth of other people—by how much money and bling they’ve acquired, rather than judging internal goods like character. The materialistic mindset fosters attitudes of competition, envy, and greed.

Madonna’s claim that we are living in a material world is backed by convincing data.

Get a load of the politeness.

Officers say they responded to a shooting call around 9 p.m. on Sunday at a home near Southwest 67th Street and Western Avenue.

When they got there, they found the alleged shooter and one person who had been shot in the stomach.

SGT. Dillon Quirk with Oklahoma City Police stated, “This person had been displaying a firearm to a family member’ […] ‘The family member did not know it was loaded.”

I was taught to always treat a gun as if it were loaded until I checked it myself and verified it was not.

The Invading Horde 0

But the folks in Eagle Pass, Texas, say the invaders are not who you might think they are. Here’s a tiny bit from the story:

Residents of the border town at the center of an ongoing feud between Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and the Biden administration made it clear over the weekend that the only people they see as “invaders” in their community are the 14 Republican governors and a convoy of Christian nationalists calling themselves “God’s Army.”

(snip)

While local residents with the Eagle Pass Border Coalition told reporters and supporters that they of course welcome all visitors to the community who respect their culture and diversity in a civil manner, they believe the recent arrival of Republican governors and a trucker convoy of Christian nationalists in support of Abbott’s violent rhetoric helped to spread “hate and descension” in their community over the weekend.

The Swift Vote Conspiracy 0

Rex Huppke wonders how the right-wing ever saw through the dastardly plot. A snippet:

As a liberal in good standing, all I can say is: Dammit, how did they figure it out?

I guess some of it was obvious. Pop superstar Swift has encouraged young people to register to vote and get involved in the electoral process, while her Chiefs tight-end boyfriend Travis Kelce has encouraged people to get vaccinated to protect themselves and others from a deadly and wildly contagious virus. Those are pretty liberal things to do.

But I didn’t think right-wing sleuths would connect the dots this quickly.

Oh well. The vaccinated cat is out of the reusable shopping bag, so I might as well let everyone in on the entire plan.

Yet another “responsible gun owner,” yet another child. Fortunately, this child will recover.

After further investigation, it was determined that the father of the victim laid his 9 mm handgun down on the counter while gathering other belongings, and his 6-year-old nephew picked up the weapon and pulled the trigger. The gun fired and the round struck the victim in the head.

We are a society of stupid.
