Ballooning Reports 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, Robert Bartholomew suggests that, based on past history (as opposed, I guess, to future history), we should be prepared for a a bunch of bogus balloon sightings in the next few months. An excerpt from his article:

I have been researching these scares for over four decades and conducted several studies involving aerial objects. Just before the outbreak of World War I, there were mass sightings of German Zeppelins in the skies in many Commonwealth countries that corresponded to the known positions of stars and planets that were misperceived as a menacing technology. One key driver of these scares is the fallibility of human perception which is notoriously unreliable and subject to error.

A Tune for the Times 0

Amongst all the fuss about the Chinese balloon, it’s about all I can do not to remember Francis Gary Powers.

Furthermore, in these days of satellites, “social” media, and the like, all this fuss over a balloon at 60,000 feet seems a bit silly.

It’s not that I’m in favor of spy balloons, but that I’m in favor of a sense of perspective.

Michael Hiltzik skewers the specious sophistries being used to push for raising the age of eligibility for social security. A snippet; follow the link, where he debunks more bunk.

As for whether it’s “easier” to work into one’s 70s than it used to be, that may be true for authors of think tank papers in air conditioned offices, but perhaps not for the millions of Americans who spent their careers hauling, digging, driving and building, outside in the elements.

Still Rising Again after All These Years, Reprise 0

Gary Franks, who served in the House of Representatives during the Clinton Presidency, was the first black Republican elected to the House in New England in five decades. Now, two decades later, he reminds us the KKK may no longer hide in hoods, but that it still does exist. Here’s a bit from his article:

. . . there is the fallacy of being “fair” to Black people which is tantamount to “hurting” white people. This is the true mantra of the Klan, which they call being “woke.”

Still Rising Again after All These Years 0

The editorial board of the Las Vegas Sun parses Florida Man’s playbook; they conclude he is implementing a three-pronged strategy to bring back Jim Crow, Here are the prongs:

  • The first is you must separate groups of people as much as possible.
  • Importantly, an essential piece of isolating people from on another is not allowing the history and reality of other people to be discussed.
  • The third essential element needed to create a society that will tolerate racism is to deny the oppressed group equal access to that core of democracy: the ballot box.

(Not that there’s any kind of pattern that one might discern in recent events.
