Activating Acting Out 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, Mark Travers discusses anger as a conscious tactic. He focuses on sports, but, given the state of dis coarse discourse, I think his article can help understand some of the political tactic we see daily, particularly on the right.

Buades-Rotger’s research (citation at the link–ed.) measured aggression elicited by being out-competed and found consistent results: Low competitive status (i.e., a lower rank due to losing more often) is linked with higher aggression. “Put bluntly, losers are more aggressive than winners on average,” he clarifies. “And that makes sense: If your rival outperforms you, you must resort to aggression to try and stop them.”

Lisa Randall:

I think it’s a problem that people are considered immoral if they’re not religious. That’s just not true. This might earn me some enemies, but in some ways they may be even more moral. If you do something for a religious reason, you do it because you’ll be rewarded in an afterlife or in this world. That’s not quite as good as something you do for purely generous reasons.

At AL.com, Frances Coleman gets to the heart of establishmentarianism (emphasis added):

Politicians and other scoundrels wrap themselves in the flag, and if that doesn’t do the trick, then they declare that they are ordained by God.

Their declarations . . . aren’t about religion. They’re about co-opting religion for irreligious ends.
