This country-right-or-wrong business is getting a little out-of-date.. History is moving pretty quickly these days and the heroes and villains keep on changing parts.

Red Scare Redux 0

At the Idaho State Journal, retired professor Wayne Schow takes issue with Doyle Beck’s hyperventilating over a little bit of social safety netting. He explains that democratic socialism and Soviet style communism are not, in fact, the same thing, a distinction of which methinks many Americans are similarly unaware (as many seem also unaware of the concept of the “common good”).

Here’s a bit from his essay; follow the link for the rest.

Let’s make sure we’re talking about the same thing. Socialism is not communism, which many confused Americans, hyperventilating, assume. Socialist governments do not take over the means of production. The socialist countries of northern Europe do provide more programs like social security, universal health care, free childcare, free higher education, et cetera — and they tax more heavily to pay for such benefits. But they are democratic and have market economies.

Shoot first, ask questions later.

In the eight-minute 911 call, Hairston’s mother told a dispatcher that her husband accidentally shot their daughter. The hysterical mother begged for an ambulance as a man in the background said repeatedly, “Breathe, baby.”

“My husband made a mistake and shot her because he thought she was an intruder,” the mother said. “She was in our garage and my husband just didn’t know what was going on. Oh, my God.”

Thus passeth another day in NRA paradise.

We are a broken society.

A History of Historical Hysteria 0

The Kansas City Star’s Melinda Henneberger reminds us that denying reality in times of crisis is not unprecedented. Here’s a tiny excerpt:

When strong evidence of the Black Death was first reported to the governor (of Milan in 1629–ed.), however, he not only ignored the Tribunal of Health but decreed that a citywide party celebrating the birth of the Spanish king’s first son should go on as planned.

Not unlike Missouri Gov. Mike Parson, who went ahead and hosted his annual fall festival last year, or South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, who in the middle of the delta spike called the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in her state a fun and “fantastic event,” the governor of Milan prioritized the prince’s birthday party. He did so, Manzoni said, “without troubling himself with the danger which would result from so great a concourse of people at such a time.”

Road Hazards 0

It is generally considered unwise to drive in a blizzard. I had to do it once and it was one of the scariest experiences of my life.

Mind you, it wasn’t a blizzard when I started out. We broke up our meeting early to beat the snow, but the snow won. Somehow, I made it home in my Chevette–a half-drive that took an hour and a half–where we remained snowed in for the better part of a week.

Sadly, we seem to be nearing peak unwisdom.

Afterthought:

I was living in Arlington, Va., at the time. That was the storm in which a jet crashed into the Potomac.
