“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” 0

The hunt for politeness continues.

Musical NotesGuns and stupid, guns and stupid.
They go together like love and Cupid.
Let me tell you brother,
You can’t have one without the other.

A Tune for the Times 0

From the Youtube page:

Sweet Caroline now has new lyrics especially for the orange menace, Donald Trump.

Maybe you’re like me and this revulsion of him comes in stages. I’ve disliked him since The Apprentice, knowing he was a shady character before then. Then, when I saw how his response to COVID, that dislike turned into disgust, which has only grown as I’ve seen his narcissism, treatment of women, people in general, corruption, idiocy and utter contempt for anything that doesn’t either stroke his ego or line his pockets.

When he became president again, this was joined by a deep sadness, because I saw so many seem to love the guy, and I know so so many more will be hurt by him being in the role. It still makes me mourn for society. We could be so much better than this.

Now I’m angry AND not wanting to give him or anyone on his team the satisfaction of seeing people like me feeling beaten. Normally, I’d like to think I’m not a person who insults or is mean to others. But gloves off for this guy. He deserves all the ridicule he can get because he’s a narcissist and hates that not everyone worships the ground he walks on.

So that’s the card I’m playing for this song. I want to sing it triumphantly, jabbing and mocking him. If any of you are rally-goers, hey, this might become an anthem you want to sing together at them. At any rate, it felt good to write, good to sing, and it would be the BEST if it could reach that idiot’s ears and rattle his ego. That’s my hope anyway! Get ready for a karaoke-ish track and SING ALONG!

“History Does Not Repeat Itself, but It Often Rhymes”* 0

Michael in Norfolk hears a rhyme–one that I am also hearing–and it’s given him a straw at which to grasp.

I hope he’s right about said straw.

Sam and the crew explain why the Trump maladministration is renditioning refugees, including Afghan refugees who helped American forces during George Bush’s Great and Glorious Patriotic War for a Lie, but making exceptions for white folks from South Africa.

A Contradiction in Terms 0

At the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Sheri Berenbaum explains why fighting prejudice, in this case antisemitism, while also opposing DEI is an oxymoronic objective, regardless of what Trump and the Trumpettes would have us think. Here’s a tiny bit from her letter to the editor (emphasis added):

Protecting the rights of one group means protecting the rights of all groups. It’s not possible to battle antisemitism without also battling racism, sexism and other forms of discrimination.

The Casting Grouch 0

The Arizona Republic’s E. J. Montini thinks he knows why Donald Trump is filling his maladministration with unqualified Fox News personalities. Here’s a bit of his theory:

Trump doesn’t seem to think of his job as putting together a government, but as auditioning actors to play bit parts in the televised extravaganza of which he is the star.

Der Spiegel reports (follow the link for the full report):

Many researchers are looking for a new home because the Trump administration has launched a broadside attack on science in the U.S.

Also, RFK Jr. has hurt fee-fees because anti-science whack-jobs don’t get no respect.

Not that these two items might in any way be related . . . .

At Above the Law, Mark Hermann remembers the past. Here’s one of his misty water-colored memories:

Once upon a time — I’m thinking about during the Clinton administration — Republicans devoutly believed that the character of a president mattered. We had to impeach Clinton; no person of bad character belonged in the White House.
