“It’s All about Mememememememe” 0

In the midst of a larger article about pro- and anti-vacine memes on “social” media, psychologist Utpal Dholakia notes the following:

Two decades of research shows that we post on social media for three main reasons: (1) to curate and portray an idealized image of ourselves, (2) to display and endorse our memberships in valued groups, whether it’s our family, a political party, or our love for a sports team, and (3) to seek attention.

Influencing others and changing their minds is a fourth reason to post, but it’s a distant fourth for most of us.

“As Amended” 0

This is Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America:

Section 3

No Person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.

I mention this because I saw earlier that Noz raised an interesting question.

Maskless Marauders 0

An outdoors store in northern Idaho temporarily closed after 25 to 30 customers entered and refused to put on masks when asked by the store’s staff.

Tri-State Outfitters in Moscow (Idaho–ed.) closed for several hours on Thursday after an organized group of mask-less customers entered, company President and CEO Joe Power said.

According to the full story at the link, these maskless marauders apparently thought they the were somehow helping a store suffering from financial difficulties in these viral times. The company’s CEO says too many of his employees have been sickened or quarantined due to the pandemic to want this kind of help.

We are dealing with not one, but two pandemics: One is COVID-19; the other is the stupid.

Gutting Out the Vote, a Long-Term View 0

Amanda Marcotte find the implications of Republicans willingness to deny and dispute the results of the recent election, maintaining that it was somehow “stolen” despite all evidence to the contrary, to be somewhat disquieting. Here’s a bit from her article at Salon; follow the link for the rest.

As confusing as this may appear, it’s ultimately about the Republican belief that elections should be democratic in name only, and the only real choice available to voters should be to vote Republican. If the voters are foolish enough choose otherwise, their right to vote should be stripped away.

In the same vein, Werner Herzog’s Bear dissects what he refers to as the ersatz (my words) “crisis of legitimacy.”

What explains all of this is the conservative worldview where they are the “real Americans.” In this framing liberals and those who vote for them are the other, something compounded by the fact that people of color and city-dwellers mostly vote for Democrats. Anyone who opposes conservatives is de facto illegitimate because they are not Real Americans.

A Moment from the Cavalcade of Dumb 0

Here’s a snippet from a California Republican’s interview on CNN regarding his refusal to accept the results of the recent election; follow the link for the rest.

“You got any proof that anything was done that was fraudulent in any election?” Cuomo asked.

“You know, I don’t have proof that men landed on the moon in 1969 because I wasn’t there,” LaMalfa replied.

“Really?” an incredulous Cuomo asked.

“Yeah,” LaMalfa shrugged.

“Do you believe the world is round?” Cuomo pressed.

We are a society of stupid.

Parent politely.

A 9-year-old boy was shot Thursday night in what police described as an accident as a father attempted to clear his handgun of ammunition.

Well, he certainly did clear his armament of ammunition, did he not?

One more time, “responsible gun owner” is an oxymoron.
