OilGunnia.”

These are folks who don’t realize that The Quick and the Dead was a movie.

A damned good movie, aside from being about 30 minutes too long, but still a movie.

When some are speculating that the Republican Party will go the way of the Whigs, who disappeared in the 1850s, the Whig Party is reborn:

Robert Bucholz, who Rhawnhurst voters chose as Judge of Election for the 5th Division in the 56th Ward, became the first Whig elected in Philadelphia in 157 years. He beat out Democratic candidate Loretta Probasco, who received 24 votes to Bucholz’s 36.

“As neither a Republican nor Democrat, in a city with a reputation for electoral dishonesty, I am an honest broker in administering elections,” Bucholz said Wednesday in an email.

By the way, those who think the Republicans will follow the path of the Whigs are quite wrong.

They have already chosen to follow the path of the Know-Nothings.

Be polite to persons in distress.

Police are investigating the shooting death of a Detroit woman who was killed while seeking help after a late-night car wreck.

And if you want to know why she deserved such courtesy, note that she was a young Not White woman looking for help in a predominately white neighborhood.

Bag Ladies 2

Gina Barreca marvels at the phenomenon of the purse.

Men? Men carry a credit card and a twenty. If they need it, they buy it. Or they ask us for it.

After all, we’ll have it in our bag.

We carry extra eyeglasses, lip balm, Q-tips, Band-Aids, a half-empty water bottle, four pens (two of which work), 16 crumpled receipts, a tiny notebook, gum, mints, hand sanitizer, perfume sample (empty), tampon, aspirin, non-aspirin pain relievers, Tums, Imodium, matches (we don’t smoke, it’s for friends), a “fun size” Snickers, nail glue, an emery board, a compact 5X mirror (ironic, right?), tweezers, cell phone, Bluetooth, floss, AAA battery (which helps with nothing, ever), and three cute, striped paper clips too adorable to discard.

I’m guessing she’s never looked in a man’s briefcase (or, in the case of hipsters, backpack). I used to have a sewing kit, bandaids, and miscellaneous other sundries in mine, in addition to my lunch.

What wasn’t in there? Briefs.

“Junk Insurance,” Reprise 0

Bruce Maiman looks at the “Obamacare cancellation hype” and explains that those policies that are no longer allowabale: They are like that car from Smiling Joe: Nicely washed and waxed, with sawdust in the transmission and oatmeal in the radiator, but oh so loooooow a sticker price.

A nugget:

. . . when CBS News reported last week that 56-year-old Florida resident Dianna Barrette would, under Obamacare, lose her $54-a-month health plan for a new $591-a-month policy, it was all about “sticker shock” and “Obama lied!”

In truth, CBS News blew it, and many of us fell for it. Did no one even bother asking in what world a $54-a-month policy buys any kind of coverage in any form of insurance? Barrette’s policy, which can be examined online, doesn’t even cover the cost of a hospital admittance fee should she fall ill. When made aware of this by, of all people, Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren, Barrette admitted she really had no idea.

Childish politeness.

According to Public Information Officer Drew Latch, police responded to a call in the Arkansas Walmart parking lot at 11:04 a.m. on Saturday. When officers arrived, they found a man, identified as Monty Wheeler, who had been shot in the back.

Upon further investigation, officers determined that the man had actually been shot by his child, age unknown, who attempted to enter his father’s truck by scaling up the driver’s side. The child accidentally grabbed hold of an unsecured and loaded shotgun, which discharged and struck his father in the back.

Little-known linguistic trivia: “Gun nut” is an anagram for “damn fool.”

The Secesh 0

Chris Honore summarizes the takeover of the Republican Party by the Secesh–the ultimate outcome of Richard Nixon’s odious southern strategy–and asks a question:

Going forward, the question raised is: Will the GOP allow this minority of reactionary ideologues to take over their party while referring to the moderate wing of the GOP as outliers, compromisers, lacking ideological commitment to the reframed conservative movement?

My answer is, “You’re damned right they will, because Obama.”
