Just What It’s Crackered Up To Be 0

Chauncey Devega, in a typically long and tightly reasoned post (I almost always say that, because his posts almost always are), exposes the recipe for Tea(bag) Crackers(TM).

A nugget:

The disruptive political behavior by the Tea Party is also a direct function of how the Republican Party is the country’s de facto “White” political interest group–and how the Tea Party, its most extreme element, functions as a White Identity organization.

Obama has been the focus of repeated efforts by the Right to delegitimize his presidency. Most of these are fundamentally rooted in a deep anxiety about his race. In all, a black man is incompatible with the “real America” that the Tea Party and neo-Confederate Republican Party yearns for. Obama’s personhood, and all of the history and weight that comes with it, is outside of the boundaries of what it means to be “American” for the White Right, their allies, and many in Red State America.

Scam Alert: You Have To Enter To Win 0

A new wrinkle in scams, this one trading on Publishers Clearing House:

Victims receive a call or text message from “Publisher’s Clearing House” telling them that they have “just won”, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release. They are instructed to go to a Walmart or Kmart to purchase two $500 Greendot cards, a prepaid credit card. They are told to then call and provide the Greendot credit card numbers, to be used later as verification.

The scammer then transfers the money from the giftcards to himself.

I’m so old, I can remember when PCH was primarily a purveyor of publications and did not offer how-to sex DVDs.

Cloaking Device 0

In the Roanoke Times, Andy Schmookler wonders at the Republicans’ magic coat of conservative invisibility. Read it.

But today’s Republican leaders, who claim to be conservatives, trample America’s political traditions while directing their followers’ attention to a few issues of concern that don’t get in the way of their deeper agenda — transferring wealth and power from average Americans to those who already have the most.

Nothing To Do, Nowhere To Go 0

The numbers do not reflect the Secesh’s recent guerrilla actions against governance.

Jobless claims rose by 1,000 to 308,000 in the week ended Sept. 28, from a revised 307,000, a Labor Department report showed today in Washington.

(snip)

The jobless claims report showed the four-week moving average, a less volatile measure than the weekly figures, dropped to 305,000 last week, the lowest level since May 2007.

The number of people continuing to receive jobless benefits jumped by 104,000 to 2.93 million in the week ended Sept. 21. The continuing claims figure does not include the number of Americans receiving extended benefits under federal programs.

Additional reports scheduled for this week are reportedly on furlough.

“A Bunch of Berlusconis” 2

Der Spiegel rounds up German coverage of the New Secesh and their rising again.

A nugget:

The overwhelming consensus among the German press is that the Republicans are the most to blame for the gridlock. In a Tuesday commentary, SPIEGEL ONLINE’s Gregor Peter Schmitz dubbed them the “kamikaze party.” He attributed the gridlock to America’s mercenary political culture — where directly elected lawmakers run for re-election every two years and campaigns are privately financed — as well as to the lack of party infrastructure compared to Germany’s parliamentary model with its publicly funded campaigns.

“It’s circumstances like these,” writes Schmitz, “that explain why a brigade of Republicans conduct themselves like a bunch of Berlusconis — as enemies of the state from within who want to cripple the country because that’s the desire of their conservative voters at home.”

Republican Paradise 0

John Aravosis had compiled a list of government functions that have been shut down, but haven’t gotten the visibility of the National Parks.

Here’s just one.

Adults and children receiving treatment for cancer through the National Cancer Institute (NCI) are being sent away.

This has been your preview of Republican Paradise.
