Well, there is some good news.

A Brooklyn jury deliberated five days before finding Shkreli guilty on three of eight counts. He had been charged with securities fraud, conspiracy to commit securities fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

Prosecutors had accused Shkreli of repeatedly misleading investors about what he was doing with their money. Mostly, he was blowing it with horrible stock picks, forcing him to cook up a scheme to recover millions in losses, they said.

Much more at the link. The story does not mention a sentencing date.

The Bickersons Go Electronic 0

El Reg reports:

A fella in the US is suing his ex?wife, alleging she broke federal wiretapping and privacy laws by snooping on his email during their divorce.

The case, just kicked off in an Illinois district court after six years of wrangling, pits Barry Epstein against his former spouse of 46 years, Paula Epstein, who filed for divorce in 2011. During their separation, Paula obtained, read and used his emails as leverage to get a favorable settlement, it is claimed.

Frankly, I don’t see how the “wiretapping” allegations can hold water between a married couple, even if they were in the midst of a divorce, but I do find it disturbing if, as clained, she shared communications between her husband and his lawyer with her own lawyer. I find even more disturbing that her lawyer didn’t tell her to stop.

Then, again, she may have done none of these things. It may just be the husband flailing about. Lots of flailing goes on during bitter divorces.

In His Salad Daze 0

He wanted more cucumbers, so he got nuts.

Incensed that there were not enough cucumbers in his salad, a Pennsylvania man allegedly threatened the life of a Wendy’s employee and later sought to drive away from the fast food eatery while a police officer had his arm inside the suspect’s vehicle, according to court records.

Denial Is Not Just a River in Egypt 0

Jim Wright examines the delusions of Republicans and their apologists who keep hoping that Donald Trump will act like anyone else but Donald Trump. An excerpt:

Look here: These people, these Republicans, these Trump apologists, they’re like battered spouses in denial.

All the warning signs were there, the sexist behavior, the tempter tantrums, the bruises and the black eyes, but they thought, you know, once we’re married he’ll come around, he’ll be okay, he’ll stop acting like this.

But Donald Trump is the very same guy today that he was yesterday, that he was two years ago, that he was a decade ago.

Donald Trump is the same horrible person he’s been his entire life.

He’s an obnoxious, ignorant, abusive blowhard enabled by wealth and privilege and if you think for one minute the power of the presidency is going to do anything but exacerbate that, then you are a goddamned fool.

Or a Republican.

Civic Duty, Part Two 1

(Part One is here.)

This is what happened during voir dire, that phase of jury duty during which the jury pool is narrowed down to the jury. I may not have the sequence exactly correct, but, if I have a few questions out of sequence, it will not impeach my larger goal, which is to dispel the Bull* (with apologies to Michael Weatherly), that television and movies promulgate.

How Stuff Works, Fake News Dept. (Updated) 0

Dick Polman dissects the production of a bit truly fake news, that is, news that is made up out of whole cloth to achieve a political end, or, in this case, made up from Fox fur (as opposed to the more common “fake news = news I don’t like”). A snippet:

Plaintiff Rod Wheeler, a Fox contributor who participated in this episode, says that Fox put words in his mouth when it “reported” that he had an FBI source who’d linked the hacking to Seth Rich. Wheeler says in his lawsuit that he had no such source, that no such source exists, and that Fox made up quotes he never said. But his biggest allegation, buttressed by contemporaneous texts, emails, and phone recordings, is that Fox invented its fakery to help Trump — to “establish that Seth Rich provided WikiLeaks with the DNC emails, to shift flame from Russia and help put to bed speculation that President Trump colluded with Russia in an attempt to influence the outcome of the presidential election.”

Addendum, Just a Bit Later:

Shaun Mullin has more. A nugget:

In fact, fake conspiracies have been effective weapons for Trump in trying to hide real conspiracies.

Fly the politely.

Transportation Security Administration agents said they found a loaded gun in a carry-on bag at Boston’s Logan International Airport, leading to the arrest of a passenger.

Officials said the gun was found in Kyle Maguire’s luggage at 6 a.m. Wednesday at a security checkpoint inside Terminal A.

The polite one has several conceal-carry licenses, but none or valid in Massachusetts or aboard airliners.
