I also find Jehovah’s Witness missionaries annoying (hint: tell them you’re Catholic).

I have also found them to be unfailingly polite and courteous. This fellow decided to return that politeness in kind.

Incensed that two Jehovah’s Witnesses approached him in the front yard of his home, an Arkansas man allegedly had his wife retrieve his 9mm handgun from the residence and then fired 19 rounds at the pair’s vehicle, police report.

As the Good Book says, “Do unto others,” and he did.

More guns would no doubt have prevented this.

Politeness begins at home.

A couple broke into a Pennsylvania home and killed the woman’s mother and brother before being shot to death by her father, the culmination of a long-running feud fueled by what a relative said Saturday was the woman’s “hatred” for her family.

Be polite during bathroom breaks.

Brandon Rapé was in a pickup truck with two friends Thursday about 11 p.m. when they pulled to the side of Sylvan Lake Drive near Sanford so that Rapé could answer the call of nature, a Sheriff’s Office report states.

The men saw a large snake in the road, and Jared Hemphill, also 18, decided to shoot it with a semiautomatic rifle that belongs to Dustin Downer, 21.

Hemphill heard a noise in the bushes and assumed it was the snake, so he fired the Remington Speedmaster and accidentally struck Rapé in the left thigh, he told investigators.

Guns and stupid, always a great combination.

When more politeness is not better.

Property owner Joseph Mitchell told deputies that he and several others were target shooting with a rifle using about 5 pounds of Tannerite, a type of explosive target marker used for firearms practice.

Mitchell said the group had placed the Tannerite in an inoperable 1993 Honda Accord parked in the middle of a large field on his property, according to Gardner.

“When the bullet struck the vehicle it detonated the Tannerite, causing the vehicle to explode,” Gardner said. “The explosion caused extensive damage to the vehicle.”

Tannerite’s website recommends using half-pound amounts of the explosive when igniting it with a high-powered rifle. The substance produces an explosion and cloud of vapor so shooters know if they’ve hit their mark.

Gunnuttery boils down to liking to blow stuff up.

All the rest is rationalization.

Pubescent politeness.

Police say a Northern California family didn’t call 911 for more than five hours after a 10-year-old girl was shot because they thought she had started menstruating.

The girl was sleeping in her Hayward home early Thursday when a stray bullet from a nearby shooting wounded her in the buttocks.

“Good Guys with Guns” 2

Der Speigel comments on American’s gun fetish (really, you know, that is the correct word). Here’s a snippet:

There’s something else the NRA likes to say: “The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” This motto was put to use on Sunday night in the heart of Manhattan, just two blocks from Times Square. Two New York City cops shot wildly at a confused — and unarmed — man. Instead they hit two passers-by.

On the same night, a young policeman in North Carolina fired 10 bullets into the body of a 24-year-old. The young black man was running up to the policeman after surviving an automobile accident — he was looking for help.

Politeness starts when one is young.

A 24-year-old man was arrested in the shooting death of a 3-year-old Michigan City-area boy in what an official said was a game the man played with a gun.

LaPorte County Prosecutor Bob Szilagyi said Monday the boyfriend of the victim’s mother told investigators he forgot the handgun was loaded when playing a gun game with the boy.

Politely hint that drivers who offend you should change their ways by shooting someone else in a tactful gesture of remonstrance.

Just after 6 p.m., Craig stopped at a traffic light at U.S. 301 when a man driving a sport utility vehicle got out and came up to the passenger side of the truck.

The man fired a gun twice, hitting Seago in the leg, arm and chest, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. Seago was taken to Tampa General Hospital with what the Sheriff’s Office said were non-life-threatening injuries.

Politeness with pastrami at my local mall just a couple of miles down the road.

A man was shot at the Jason’s Deli near Pembroke Mall on Sunday afternoon.

(snip)

An argument between two groups of people escalated to the point that one male produced a gun and shot another man in the shoulder. The injured man made his way to Sears inside the mall and dialed 911.

If he’d walked to the other side of the mall, he could have called 911 from Target, which somehow seems more apt.

Obviously, this means that everyone should be packing.

Polite in the park.

Rangers at Yellowstone National Park are investigating the shooting death of a 3-year-old girl at a campground inside the park.

The mother of the girl told a 911 dispatcher that the girl shot herself with a handgun Saturday morning, according to a statement from the park.

Another random act of politeness.

Police say an 18-year-old woman was accidentally shot Friday evening and then was pronounced dead an hour later after her family rushed her to a hospital in her own car, authorities say.

“We can characterize this young women’s death, as unintended and extremely tragic,” said Cmdr. Jeff Satur, Longmont police spokesman.

Addendum, the Next Day:

She was shot by one of those good guys with a gun.
