Just another day in NRA Paradise . . . .

An 18-year-old student shot at the STEM School in Highlands Ranch has died, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said, and two male students are in custody for the shooting that injured multiple other students.

(snip)

The suspects went “deep inside the school” and engaged in two locations, he said. The suspects used at least one handgun but it was unknown what other weapons might have been used.

A house without books is like a room without windows. No man has a right to bring up his children without surrounding them with books, if he has the means to buy them.

The Snaring Economy 0

Philadelphia takes Silicon valley scofflaws to court.

Plus the New York Times Sunday business section had an interesting exploration of Uber, the aforementioned scofflaw, its history of questionable workplace conduct which led to its dumping its CEO and founder, and its IPO.

Aside:

This fits right in with the Bret Stephens column that I cited earlier today.

Bret Stephens has qualms. An excerpt:

The issue is much simpler: Do you trust Mark Zuckerberg and the other young lords of Silicon Valley to be good stewards of the world’s digital speech?

(snip)

The deeper problem is the overwhelming concentration of technical, financial and moral power in the hands of people who lack the training, experience, wisdom, trustworthiness, humility and incentives to exercise that power responsibly.

Check out the politeness.

The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office told the Tampa Bay Times on Monday that deputies’ investigation shows that 69-year-old Vernon Messier was shot Sunday when his wife’s purse fell off a counter at a Land O’ Lake Publix, causing the two-shot derringer inside to fire.

Louis Brandeis:

The difference between a nation and a nationality is clear, but it is not always observed. Likeness between members is the essence of nationality, but the members of a nation may be very different. A nation may be composed of many nationalities, as some of the most successful nations are.

Aside:

I had a hardware issue with the Mediabox. It was still under warranty and Zareason stood behind their product like Hank Aaron stood at the plate.

Since a freak lightning strike on a nearby tree blew away my Lenovo graphics tablet, all three of my computers–two desktops and a laptop–are now Zareasons.
