In the Zone 0

Update: Grammatical erorrs correxted.

At The Charlotte Observer, Mary Newsom reminds that “single family residence” zoning (as opposed to residential vs. industrial vs. commercial zoning”) has its origins in racism. A nugget:

In The Color of Law, author Richard Rothstein tells how early zoning ordinances specifically banned blacks from certain zones. The Supreme Court outlawed that in 1917, but in many cities, Rothstein writes, “To prevent lower-income African Americans from living in neighborhoods where middle-class whites resided, local and federal officials began … to promote zoning ordinances to reserve middle-class neighborhoods for single-family homes that lower-income families of all races could not afford.”

Meanwhile, federal rules and redlining kept black families from getting mortgages, and housing developers couldn’t get financing without whites-only covenants in the deeds.

I’ve cited this quotation from Lyndon Johnson before, but it bears repeating, because we are watching it play out during every day of the Trumpling:

If you can convince the lowest white man that he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll even empty his pockets for you.

The Rude One points out the obvious that’s so obvious no one else I’ve seen or heard, including me, has noticed it.

The recent wave of abortion restrictions in states such as Alabama are prima facie establishment of religion (warning: rudeness at the link).

Politeness goes to the dogs.

Deputies spoke with five residents who said the incident started when one man told Collins to get his “aggressive” dog off his property. Collins became upset and backed his vehicle into the man’s driveway, yelling at him and others involved.

“At which point, Mr. Collins did retrieve a handgun and pointed it at the victims and said, ‘I will take care of all you … right now’,” LCSO Inv. Sgt. Chris Bowen wrote in a report. “All parties involved said the gun was chrome or silver in color. … Prior to my arrival, officers discovered in a flower bed in front of the defendant’s residence a tan and silver air soft pistol.”

No one was shot, and the dog lover has been charged with multiple counts of assault.

Get a leg up on politeness.

Police said Amel Villarreal Jr. was waiting to pick a family member up from Summerlin Academy around 4:10 p.m., after school hours. As he sat in a mini-van in the school’s visitor lot, police said, he took a gun from his waistband and attempted to stow it in the van’s center console.

Before the 9mm semi-automatic pistol could be secured, however, police said Villarreal shot himself in the leg.

The NRA will no doubt argue that, had the leg been armed, it could have defended itself.
